For the people of Karachi, it is commonplace to witness someone relieving themselves on trees, pavements and even bus stops as authorities fail to take action against this environmental and health hazard.
However, this seems to have changed on Sunday as Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui expressed his dissatisfaction over a stark absence of toilets in public places. Siddiqui said that availability of public toilets is essential for an improved environment and revealed that the administration has planned to build 2,000 public toilets in all six districts of the city. He said this while chairing a meeting with the district deputy commissioners and representatives of different civic bodies.
“Toilets will be established in all public places and we have constituted focal groups to speed up the development work for their establishment,” he added. The commissioner also expressed dissatisfaction over the dysfunctional 152 public toilets in the city.
During the meeting, Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) representative Atiqur Rehman informed that the CPLC has already established 12 toilets in North Nazimabad, Board office Chowrangi, Nehr-e-Khayyam and Hassan square, but these toilets are not fit for use since they don’t have electricity or water supply.
Upon hearing this, a Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) representative offered free-of-charge electricity and water connections to CPLC public toilets while also promising their support for the 2,000 toilets around the city.
