Police have registered a case of attempted suicide against a  girl who set herself on fire in front of the Mir Hazar Khan police station after hearing that the suspects who had allegedly raped her were granted bail.

The victim, who is a college student, received major burn injuries. Police took her to the Tehsil Hospital but due to her critical condition, she was referred to Nishtar Hospital Multan. Doctors said that 70 per cent of the victim’s body has been burnt.

Her mother said that when the victim tried to record protest against the bail, she was tortured by Sub Inspector Rana Zulfiqar.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif took notice of the incident and has directed the authorities concerned to submit a report. He also issued directives that the victim should be provided the best possible medical care.

Police had registered a rape case against six suspects on January 5. The investigating officer Rana Zulfiqar reported that the accused were innocent and have been released on bail.
