
Law Minister Rana Sanaullah and Capital City Police Officer Chaudhry Shafique Ahmad announced on Thursday that the police had arrested the biggest gang of robbers in the history of the city.
The CCPO told a press conference that five robbers involved in looting the houses of two former inspectors general, a federal minister, 12 doctors, 23 industrialists and several factory owners had been arrested. He said gold jewellery and cash worth more than Rs200 million, dozens of hand grenades, rifles and pistols were akso seized. The CCPO said the robbers were identified as Hassan alias Bhalla, Raja Shamrez, Waseem alias Nasir, Shakeel Kiani and Naseem Kashmiri.He said the robbers had confessed to committing 57 robberies in Lahore, Karachi, Sheikhupura, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Azad Kashmir.
The law minister said members of the gang used to wear masks to hide their faces and gloves to avoid arrest through fingerprints. He announced cash prizes and commendatory certificates for the police team for arresting the gang. DIG Investigation Zulfiqar Hameed said the robbers would not snatch the gold ornaments that the women in the house would be wearing and would only take away valuables in the houses.
