‘Pakistan should shed its ambivalence on terror’

NEW DEHLI: Pakistan should shed its ambivalence on terrorism, India’s Defence Minister A K Antony said on Tuesday while addressing the top brass of the Indian army.

“Pakistan does not appear to be willing to leave its India-centric posturing. It will have to shed its ambivalence in dealing with terror groups. Though we are not unduly concerned, we will have to keep constant vigil on the developments in Pakistan,” Antony said at the army commanders’ conference, reported the Times of India.

The five-day conference, to be attended by senior army generals, will review the security scenario, operational and administrative preparedness and look at improving the army’s performance. It will also focus on training and its effectiveness based on state-of-the-art technology.

Fighting terrorism costs the nation substantially, Antony said, while reiterating that India would crush terrorism “with all our might”. “The army has been quite successful in countering the proxy war and in minimising the incidents of terror,” he said. “Still, as long as the terror infrastructure across the border continues to flourish, we cannot afford to drop our guard,” he added. According to him, the security situation in the bordering region of Afghanistan and Pakistan continues to be a cause for concern.

“Despite the physical and material cost, India has at all times, advocated peace and stability with all nations including our neighbours,” he said. “The volatile political situation in our immediate neighbourhood has the potential of having a debilitating impact on the region. India’s role in preserving peace and stability thus, becomes all the more important.”

sikander | 14 years ago | Reply Tani and Amna when will you people learn to accept the truth, its really bad in pakistan. With begging bowl you get the money and use it for covert operations and destruction. I guess India does not do that, what ever your theory and comments India can sustain any amount of brickbatting etc. It has been there for ages unknown and will be there in the future as a beacon. Only thing is that India is too soft somtimes people take it for granted.
srinivasan | 14 years ago | Reply Nobody disputes the fact that pakistan is fighting terrorism and have lost enormously in its fight both in money and in manpower. What people esp Indians fail to understand is why is Pakistan nurturing some groups and fighting others. It is this policy of duality that puts the ambivalence in pakistan's approach,. If Pakistan is willing to fight all groups then the whole world esp India will also help. But as long as pak follows strategic depth and assets policies, you guys will end up with liabilities. It is not "hate filled mindset' as Tani puts it or "dhushmani mindset" as Amna puts it. It is the attitude and intention of Pak mindset to hurt India thru terror groups that makes other countries and India to advice and condemn Pakistan For RAW's involvement pl put up evidence, No amount of shouting from roof tops will make them true,. By the way, no other country is shouting at India for alleged RAW involvement But every one including your erstwhile dictator, ambassadors keep saying about Pak state's involvement in nurturing terror groups and exporting them .Pl introspect and do soul searching. The correct approach's benefits will accrue to pakistan and no one else. For all the complaints, RAW is Indian govt agency and no RAW personnel was caught or accused of involvement in terrorism activities. No consulates in any country is pure and devoid of the Intelligence agencies of that country. So no use blaming India or RAW. Fix the terrorism policy and see the results yourself.. India also supported the LTTE once and after Rajiv Gandhi's assasination did a u turn for the good. Its support to the sri lankan govt help wipe out LTTE. Maoists are India's internal problems and they are NOT repeat NOT EXPORTED TO PAKISTAN by India
