KARACHI: After winning back-to-back events in Karachi, Pakistan number one Shabbir Iqbal maintained his form to win the JA Zaman Memorial Open Golf Championship, which concluded at the Gymkhana Golf Course in Lahore on Sunday.

The experienced golfer, who dominated the Karachi circuit last month by winning the Chief of Air Staff (CAS) and DHA golf titles, appeared to be in full control throughout the three-day championship, featuring 90 professional golfers.

The Islamabad-based pro played the final round marking a one-under-71 to ensure yet another title.

Iqbal led the opening round with a four-under-68, carrying the same leading momentum in the second one with a five-under-67. The consistent show gave him the final card of ten-under-206, a trophy-winning score.

Meanwhile, Danyal Jehangir made a leap to finish runner-up after striking six-under-66 in the final round — the best effort of the last day. He finished with an aggregate of 210, having earned identical cards of 72 in the first two rounds.

Gujranwala’s Safdar Khan, who carded 69 each in the first two days, suffered a dip in performance in the decisive round which earned him a one-over-par 73 to finish third with a total of 211.

Adil Jahangir and Aashir Masih followed the golfer with a joint fourth spot, aggregating a total of 213 each. Talat Ijaz occupied the following position with a score of 214, including the final round score of 70.

Meanwhile, Zohaib Asif won the amateur event with score of 227, followed by Salman Jehangir (229) and Robin Bagh (231) in second and third positions respectively.
