Rashid Latif appointed chief selector of Pakistan cricket team

Latif will take over as chief selector of the Pakistan cricket team on April 1, 2014.

LAHORE: Former captain and batsman Rashid Latif, who retired in 2006, will take over as chief selector of the Pakistan cricket team from April 1, 2014, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Wednesday, Express News reported.

According to a press statement issued by the PCB, Latif met PCB Chairperson Najam Sethi and discussed various issues. In addition to his responsibilities as chief selector, Latif will also assist the PCB with training and anti-corruption matters.

“I am excited on becoming associated with the PCB. I will endeavour to build a strong team keeping in view the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. I will also assist PCB in anti-corruption matters,” Latif said. He has also served as coach of the Afghanistan cricket team, and is known for his stance against match-fixing.

Commenting on Latif's appointment PCB Chairperson Najam Sethi said he has keenly followed Latif's views on cricket in the past and that he trusts Latif will be able to bring about positive changes.

Latif has played 37 Tests and 166 One-day Internationals (ODIs) for Pakistan.

I don't think it is a fair comment. You made prejudice remarks yourself by implying Indian Urdu speakers versus Pakistani Urdu speakers. You mentioned mostly comes from Sindh and 80% get elected from Punjab. This is true that 80% got selected in playing eleven from Punjab. That's because if you move PCB's headquarter from Lahore to Karachi you'll see balance keeping in mind if there are officials elected on merit. PCB chairman himself is a product of nepotism. Rashid Latif is not. I think the move by Najam Sethi to appoint Rashid Latif is to curb his mouth on Basit Ali's dissmisal. As Shakeel Shaikh of Islamabad Cricket Association name called Basit Ali a match fixer, although had it been Europe, or the USA one should provide proof or otherwise face defamation charges in the courts. But where there are Kangroo courts you don't get justice.

I think on merit Rashid Latif is the right choice. He needs to create a standard for selection first and share with everyone based on that pick players. Otherwise, everyone will blame just like his predecessors of "favoritism, nepotism, corruption" and other charges.

On Basit Ali I think, he should take this Shakeel guy to court for allegedly calling him a match fixer.

U live in your own world, with such a racist mind....People who sold Pakistan honor were not from Karachi... all the time they came out from same part of Pakistan....like Salman BUTT, Asif, Amir, Salim MALIK, Akrama Raza... and a long list... I will keep my self in this reply to Cricket only... however you went down below the belt.... People like you always think PCB mean Punjab Cricket Board... your so called statement says 80% cricketers come from Punjab... the reason is because your selectors cant see outside Punjab... this is your grudge to Karachi what you stated in your comment... if we stopped the revenue generated from this city then u will be no where.....

Mr Shahid Pervaiz | 10 years ago | Reply A very strong smell of political appointment, a crafty move from Mr Najam Sethi, to keep his mouth shut, give him a good job in PCB, no wonder international cricket in Pakistan is on its knees for a long time because of such politically motivated appointments and what excuses they give, because of international cricket not taking place on Pakistani soil, hence it is sliding down, sorry for swearing 'bollocks'. I am waiting for the day when PCB will join the trio of greedy pigs and mark my words that wait is not too far. Please don't take me wrong and no offence to Urdu speaking in Karachi, I have learnt a lot living in overseas in a very much Indian dominated Urdu speaking areas, and one thing is sure, they are very much prejudice and live their own circles and do a lot of favours to each others, 80% of the players in the cricket eleven comes from Punjab & other parts but not Sind, then why most of the selectors are from Karachi? So far I know the selection of PCB officials & players must be on merit then why all the time we all see most of the officials comes from Sind while these officials can be picked from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan as well. No wonder what we always say, 'Pakistan mein jungle kaa kannon hei' or ' jiss kee lathee os kee baance'. Ok Mr Rashid Latif, take a start, 'tie, coat aur patloon pahanoo, throrre see English bolo, sethi sahib kee chamcha giree karoo, aap kee nokree lumbee hogee'.
