Raymond Davis case: Court rules victim’s mother-in-law may get share in Diyat

Davis opened fire from inside his car at Faheem and Faizan, then shot Faizan twice, according to police chalan.

LAHORE:

A lower court judge has ruled that Musarrat Rani, the mother-in-law of Faheem Shamshad, who was gunned down by CIA agent Raymond Davis on January 26, 2011, is entitled to a share in the Diyat amount paid while settling the case.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Akmal Khan passed the verdict on a petition of Musarrat Rani, who had sought the release of Rs395,375 (half the total amount paid).

Musarrat’s daughter, Shumaila, committed suicide shortly after her husband’s death. A court determined her share of the Diyat amount to be Rs197,687,50 in a March 2011 judgment. While a notice was issued to Shumaila’s legal heirs and a written reply filed on their behalf, there were no claimants to the amount. Mussarat was thus judged to be entitled to the amount.

As per the challan submitted by the police, Davis opened fire from inside his car at Faheem and a second victim, Faizan, and then shot Faizan twice in the back. According to witnesses, Davis then took photographs of the victims before he fled the scene.
