MULTAN: State Minister for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali has said that the government is holding talks with 25 sugar mills to ensure production of 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity with the help of sugarcane bagasse. Addressing  a press conference at the Multan Electric Power Company headquarters, he said there were 106 sugar mills in the country and currently talks with 25 of them were under way. This is part of the initiatives the government is taking to tackle the energy crisis. It hopes to add 1,500 to 2,000MW to the national grid by the end of this year. The minister said drive against gas theft was being launched without any discrimination and asked the parliamentarians to extend cooperation, so that electricity could be provided at cheaper rates to the consumers. He said he had issued directives for removing transformers of the feeders with high losses.
