Hundreds of residents of Khurarianwala staged a protest demonstration against the police on Monday. They demanded the immediate arrest of criminals who had shot a doctor last week on Sunday.
The protesters placed the body at Khurarianwala Chowk and chanted slogans against the police.
Muhammad Akram, one of the protesters, said, “Tahir Rafiq, a resident of Madina Town, used to run a clinic in Chak 76-RB Rasoolpur. Last Sunday, his rivals went to the clinic and shot him. Rafiq received serious bullet injuries and was taken to a hospital where he soon passed away.”
Akram said that the police had been informed about the incident but no one had been arrested yet. He said the police had been unsympathetic and indifferent towards Rafiq’s family.
On receipt of information, a police team visited the scene and told the protesters that they would baton charge them if they did not disperse immediately.
The Khurarianwala station house officer said that they had registered a case against five people and had started investigations. “We need some time to trace the culprits and it is impossible for us to arrest people without due process.” He said a team had been constituted to arrest the culprits.
