PESHAWAR:

Opposition parties in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) submitted a requisition on Thursday, calling for a session of the provincial assembly to discuss eight “important” issues.

About 37 lawmakers from the opposition benches signed the requisition which was submitted at the K-P Assembly Secretariat by Awami National Party’s parliamentary leader Sardar Hussain Babak, MPA Yasmin Pir Mohammad Khan and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Sobia Shahid.

Opposition parties also submitted an eight-point agenda which will be discussed during the session. The agenda calls for a discussion on law and order, formation of Zakat committees on a political basis, inequitable distribution of development funds, government’s failure to follow up on its educational emergency announcement, polio campaign, power outages, appointment of advisers for development works and their expenses, and politically motivated appointments in various government departments.

Shahid confirmed the contents of the agenda and said the allocation of development funds by the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf-led government was unjust.

Another PML-N lawmaker, Arbab Akbar Hayat, said treasury members have been allocated development funds worth Rs70 million while opposition members have been given Rs30 million.

On January 29, the opposition parties, after a meeting, decided to call a session of the provincial legislature to discuss important issues faced by the province.

This is going to be the third session called by the opposition. The first one took place from September 30 to October 3 following twin suicide attacks at All Saints Church and the second after the assassination of law minister Israrullah Khan Gandapur in a suicide attack in DI Khan, from October 23-30.

The assembly speaker is bound to call a session within two weeks after a requisition is submitted at the Assembly Secretariat.
