KARACHI:

Expanded Programme on Immunisation director Mazhar Khamisani told The Express Tribune that following the attack on the polio team on Tuesday, the provincial government has decided to increase the allowance of workers from Rs250 to Rs500 per day.

“The World Health Organisation will continue to pay Rs250 and the same amount will be added by the provincial government,” he said. Khamisani confirmed that the drive will not be suspended given the security plan was finalised. Sources said that following the attack on the polio team, former president Asif Ali Zardari issued directives to Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah to regularise the jobs of the health workers. “Zardari had arranged a meeting at Bilawal House and directed the CM to surprise the lady health workers by releasing their salaries on time and regularising their jobs.”

Lady Health Workers’ Association president Bushra Arain said that their three-month salaries would be transferred in a couple of days. “We have also asked them to pay them petrol allowance every month,” she said.
