MULTAN:

“As many as 4,000 health centres will be established in the Punjab to control population growth,” Minister for Population Welfare Zakia Shah Nawaz said on Friday.

Speaking to the media and health workers at Dera Ghazi Khan Circuit House, she said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) would take all possible measures to control population.

“We have devised a 10-year policy… priority has been given to the Punjab where population is rapidly increasing … 4,000 health centres will be set up in five years.”

The minister said suggestions had already been sent to the provincial government for hiring doctors and population welfare officers. “These officers will guide families keeping in view the social norms and values,” she said.

Nawaz said workers’ efficiency would be executed after every six months.

“Contracts of inefficient workers will be terminated immediately... Hard work, merit and transparency will be promoted.” She said district governments would help locate places where health centres needed to be established.

“We will try to give up Pakistan’s sixth position on the list of most populated countries.”

The minister invited the health officials and workers to come up with suggestions for devising effective policies.
