Australia, who lost the Test series 2-0 and were also defeated in Wednesday’s opening one-day match, seek to level the three-match series after India, chasing a stiff target, were indebted to a brilliant hundred by Virat Kohli.
“I thought 289 was a pretty good score,” said Clarke. “But they scored freely in the initial overs and that became the difference between the two sides. It was easy to score when dew sets in. It was really tough to score in the first half.”
Meanwhile, Australian fast-bowler Doug Bollinger has been sent home from the one-day series against India with an abdominal strain, said team officials, raising further injury concerns before the Ashes. The fast-bowler, who also missed the second Test against India with an abdominal problem, will be accompanied by middle-order batsman Mike Hussey who is returning to play for his domestic side West Australia.
“Doug reported some minor discomfort to his abdomen during his rehabilitation from the previous injury,” said team physio Kevin Sims. “We don’t think the new issue is serious but it’ll prevent him from achieving the workloads necessary for him to be available for selection in the third match in Goa.”
The Cricket Australia statement said Hussey was returning from the tour to avoid over-exertion during the season.
