Pakistan will go into the Test series with a new captain which may also see the return of Younus Khan, providing the middle-order batsman proves his form to the selectors.
“When it comes to limited-overs cricket, South Africa are a very fine side and are among the top three or four teams in the world,” Waqar told reporters at the conclusion of the five-day camp at Gaddafi Stadium. “No doubt it’s going to be tough but as coach, I’m optimistic of the team shining in all versions of the game. Apart from the T20s, we have to work really hard in the ODIs and Test matches.”
Waqar sought optimism from the tour of England saying that despite all the controversies, his young team fought well against England and Australia in Test matches.
“Match-fixing and spot-fixing problems are not my problems. It’s the board’s matter and they are solving it. Unfortunately, on the England tour it happened and that is bad for cricket, not only for Pakistan but overall. But despite the off-field controversies, it was a pretty successful tour with such a young side.”
Waqar hoped for a good performance from his bowlers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi but urged his batsmen to support them in order to produce the desired results.
“The pitches in Abu Dhabi and Dubai are not matured enough so I think we’ll rely more on our spinners. Shoaib Akhtar and Shahid Afridi are playing well and our bowling is definitely better than them. We just need a push in our batting.”
Coach welcomes Younus’ inclusion
The coach welcomed the inclusion of former captain Younus Khan in the squad, terming him capable of performing and giving his 100 per cent.
“It definitely is a good addition to the team. His presence will boost our middle order and the young players in the side will definitely learn from his vast experience.”
