ISLAMABAD:

The Islamabad High Court on Thursday ordered the vice chancellor (VC) and registrar of Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) to respond to a petition challenging the appointment of new teachers.

IHC Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui gave the orders while hearing a contempt petition filed by QAU Associate Professor Dr Ishtiaq Ahmad — who is currently on deputation as Quaid-i-Azam Fellow at Oxford University — in September 2013 to preserve his right to seniority, which he claimed was in danger because of misconduct on the part of the varsity’s administration. VC Dr Masoom Yasinzai and registrar Dr Shafiqur Rehman will have to appear in court on January 29.

On October 1 last year, the court had taken notice of the petitioner’s application seeking professorship under the Tenure Track System and had directed the VC to take appropriate measure regarding his appointment as a tenured associate professor within a week. According to the order, the appointment of a professor at the QAU School of Politics and International Relations cannot go ahead until the tenure issue was resolved.

The petitioner pointed out that the VC and registrar were not complying with the IHC judgment and had moved ahead with the selection process.
