PESHAWAR:

Police and paramilitary personnel killed a militant during a search operation following an attack on a police check post in the limits of the Sarband police station here on Wednesday, police officials said.

A policeman and a young passerby sustained injuries when militants attacked the Bara Qadeem police check post with a bomb earlier during the day. The check post is located near the border of the Khyber Agency.

Sources said a locally-made explosive device was used in the attack which took place at around 10:00 am. The attack injured Asad, a child passing by and a police constable. Police and Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel cordoned off the site following the attack and launched a search operation in the area.

A militant was killed during the search operation following the attack, while two others managed to escape.

A militant had lobbed a hand-grenade at the police check post, said SP cantonment Circle, Shafiullah Khan. He said that the attacker had come to the area on a motorcycle with two other accomplices who managed to escape, adding that the militant was identified as Aurangzeb, son of Fazlur Rehman, a resident of Badaber.

Shafiullah said that the militant tried to escape towards the tribal area but was killed by police following a chase where he was cornered inside a house.

Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) officials said the explosive device was locally made and weighed around a 100 grams and that pellets had been used to increase its destructive power.

Later in the afternoon, unidentified attackers lobbed a hand-grenade at the gate of the FC fort, situated in the same area.  The attack was carried out at around 2.00 pm and damaged the fort’s gate but there were no casualties.

Security forces have imposed a curfew on a portion of a bazaar in the area and have closed it for any kind of traffic due to threats from the militants for the past several months.

Bomb kills 3 FC personnel

The paratroopers were on a routine patrol when the bomb planted by militants hit a vehicle, said the spokesman.   The incident happened in Qambar Khel town, which lies on the route of Nato supply convoys heading to the US-led war effort in Afghanistan. Additional information by AFP
