KARACHI: The Faisal Nabi murder case took another twist on Wednesday when a district and sessions court ordered an absconder to appear before the court in person after he filed an application requesting the court to declare him innocent in the case.

Mansoor Mujahid, an award-winning filmmaker of Seedlings [Lamha] fame, has been booked and arrested for allegedly killing his friend, Faisal Nabi, in an apartment in Defence on the night between June 19 and 20.

The suspect’s friend, Anab Hameed and a companion of the deceased, Masuma Zainab Abidi, have also been detained for allegedly abetting the murder.

An additional district and sessions judge in District South, Sohail Jabbar Malik, directed the only absconder in the case, Waseem, to appear before the court at the next hearing after he submitted an application through his lawyer seeking clearance from the case.

In his application, Waseem contended that he had no connection with the case and asked the court to declare him innocent. Following the application, the judge directed the counsel to bind Waseem to appear before the court in person at the next hearing.

The court had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for Waseem after the police had declared him an absconder in the charge sheet. Earlier, the police had told the court that Waseem had important details regarding the incident, which the police could not share until he was arrested.

Waseem was a driver of one of the suspects, said a counsel for the complainant, adding that he was unaware of the driver’s exact role in the case.

The police had registered an FIR No. 191/2013 under section 302/34 for murder at the Clifton police station on the complaint of the victim’s brother-in-law, Nayal Khan. The police have also registered another FIR, No. 192/2013, under section 13-E, against Mujahid for possessing an illegal weapon.

The court adjourned the case till December 29.
