Shiv Sena seeks burqa ban in India

Building off the France ban, the Shiv Sena demanded that India ban the burqa as it can be 'used to steal children'.

India’s far-right political party Shiv Sena on Tuesday demanded that the burqa be banned in India.

According to NDTV, the party made the following statements in its newspaper, Saamana:

"If the burqa is used to steal children, then we demand that it be banned as per law,"

"When burqa was banned in Turkey by Kemal Pasha, Islam did not come in between. Why only is it so in India,"

Citing France as an example, the party said the French president had taken a 'revolutionary step’ in banning the burqa.

The French parliament had passed a law in September prohibiting wearing a full-face veil in public, meaning a ban will come into force early next year if it is not overturned by senior judges.

Some family members went for Haj and they told me the security folks at Kaaba tell women to uncover their faces when entering the mosque. Only hair, hands and legs are to be covered - not the face. Who started this shuttle cock nonsense??

Post Human | 13 years ago | Reply banning the burqa is just as insipid as banning the bikini. it’s a personal choice. some may wear it forcibly, but others of their own free will. undermining the rights of one to stop another is not justice. Like someone said, it’s better to have criminals let off, than to have one innocent in jail. blanket bans or allowances do more harm than good in the long term. that said, instances of forcible obedience should be investigated. with a large population and limited resources (like India, or any country for that matter) this will not work overnight. but it’s a start. france went nuts with its new law. just like arabia. but banning the burqa, like anoop said, will lead to more burqa wearers – just out of spite. this is not a simple question to answer. local sensibilities need also to be taken into account. but xenophobia should be aggressively countered by educating the masses. others’ rights and opinions are just as important as one’s own.

Sushil | 13 years ago | Reply Issue is not related to ban burqa, issue is we should stop this kind of incident in future. also ppl are taking disadvantages of burqa , my only concern is this should not happen again, so the only solution is dont ban burka completly but when our muslim sisters shouldn't wear the mask on face so atleast we know who is the person inside this burqa. And something like this which was happened at hospital can be avoided. And Mr Shaik please dont misguide ppl, I am not supporting ShivSena but they raied this issue becoz even non-muslim ppl are also taking disadvantages of burqa, just looking at burqa we cant say its a lady or a men inside it.

Anoop | 13 years ago | Reply I dont see the need. There are a large % of people who are heavily influenced by the free-thinking non-Muslims they find around them. For example. A girl wears a burqa that her father forces her to wear. Her friends who are non-Muslims, roam around freely and safely without a burqa while she wears one. She might even remove it in their presence and the absence of her father The question is: Will she,in the future, force her daughter to wear one? I dont think so. The Indian society is largely secular, free and progressive. Although there are huge issues to be tackled still. Talk about Burqa ban will only create more Burqa wearers in India. Just let them be and the more progressive ideology will take root.

Susheel | 13 years ago | Reply Dear Mr.Mehsud, Just because we are secular does not mean, Islam law will be allowed to run here. Islam as a religion is ok, not as Islamic law. We have Indian law here and that is why Ajmal Kasab is alive. I am not for Shiv Sena, but unfortunately, Islam is too much to bear, if forced down our throats. And remember, In India, Islam is a foreign religion.
