ISLAMABAD:

Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani has transferred Abdul Hameed, secretary to the chief justice, to the Human Rights Cell of the apex court as deputy director.

The move came two days after the Supreme Court administration came under scathing criticism for allegedly allowing selective media coverage of the full-court reference in honour of Justice Jillani’s predecessor, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. Abdul Hameed served as staff officer to the former chief justice.

According to sources, he is allegedly involved in the provision of video coverage of the full-court reference to one private television channel.

Justice Jillani has taken suo motu notice of the incident and an inquiry by a committee under an additional register of the Supreme Court is presently under way.

In a separate development, the government directed the relevant quarters to ensure foolproof security arrangements for the former chief justice. A formal request for more security was made by Justice (retd) Chaudhry a few days before his retirement.

“A few days back, we received a letter from the Supreme Court Registrar Office seeking a bullet-proof vehicle and proper security arrangements for the CJP after his retirement. Accordingly, we have written a letter to the cabinet division and Islamabad police,” said a senior officer of the interior ministry.

He added that a bullet-proof vehicle and security will be provided to Justice (retd) Chaudhry within a few days.
