Tech boost: IT ministry to set up telecentres

500 telecenters will be established in all provinces including FATA by next year.

ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for IT, Anusha Rehman, said on Monday that 500 telecenters would be established in all provinces including the Federally Administered Tribal Areas by next year. The minister was chairing a meeting in order to review proposals regarding the establishment of the telecenters in rural areas of Pakistan. The Minister emphasised that the establishment of telecenters is direly needed in order to serve the neglected and unprivileged population of rural areas in all provinces. These telecenters will offer many services such as E-learning, E-commerce, E-agriculture and verification/ Registration of SIM cards, national identity cards through Nadra E-health services would also be provided to the people of rural areas subsequently, she added. She added that telecenters would not only offer local communities with state of art computer equipment and broadband facility but also be able to generate employment and entrepreneurship for the people of remote areas.
