KARACHI: Former champions Wapda moved to third position in the Pakistan Premier Football League (PPFL) after defeating NBP 2-1 at the KMC Stadium on Monday.

NBP took the lead in the ninth minute of the match with Sher Ali’s goal, but Wapda’s seasoned striker Arif Mehmood struck an equaliser in the 26th.

Both teams continued with an aggressive strategy in the second-half, however, Mehmood scored again in the first minute of extra-time to seal Wapda’s eighth win in the season.

Mehmood said that the team will perform better on their home ground in Lahore this month, after playing their last match in Karachi on Monday.

“We took a little time to adjust to the Karachi weather,” Mehmood told The Express Tribune. “Overall we played well. In yesterday’s [Monday] match we showed that we can win despite all the injury problems that our team is facing at the moment.”

Mehmood, who was also the national striker till 2010, said that he would want to end the season with as many goals as possible.

“My aim is to score the most goals this season for me and the team. It is also about proving a point.”

Currently, he has scored 12 goals in 17 matches for Wapda.

Mehmood further stated that besides KRL and Army, only KESC from Karachi and Muslim FC from Chaman could pose tough competition in the third leg of the league.

Wapda now have 32 points, while NBP stayed in ninth position with 25 points after playing 19 matches.
