Partridge fighting: Gomal University staffers held

Student unions at the university have expressed outrage over the incident.

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Police raided a house in Shah Alam, DI Khan on Sunday and arrested 104 gamblers. They also confiscated 20 partridges, dozens of motorcycles and a sum of Rs170,250 used for gambling. According to Cantonment police station SHO Saifur Rehman, the raid was carried out on the house of Pervaiz Salim, in charge of academic affairs at Gomal University, where a large number of people had gathered to gamble on partridge fighting. Salim was arrested, along with several other staffers of Gomal University by DI Khan city DSP Bahwal Khan who led the raid himself. Bahwal said the police had acted on prior intelligence. Meanwhile, student unions at the university have expressed outrage over the incident. Pukhtun Students Federation Gomal University President Sherullah Wazir, while speaking to The Express Tribune said, “While Gomal University is drowning in a financial crisis, this is what our teachers are doing.” He claimed, Salim head of the English Department, also embezzled funds from tribal students’ scholarships given by the USAID.
