The spacecraft, called Mangalyaan, now embarks on a 10-month journey around the sun before reaching Mars in September next year, the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said.
"The spacecraft is on course to encounter Mars after a 10-month journey around the sun," ISRO said in a statement.
"Following the completion of the latest manoeuvre, the Earth orbiting phase of the spacecraft has ended," it said.
But Mangalyaan, which is travelling at a speed of 32 kilometres per second, could still face hurdles before India joins an elite club of countries to have reached Mars.
India has never before attempted to travel to Mars and more than half of all missions to the planet have ended in failure, including China's in 2011 and Japan's in 2003.
So far, only the United States, European Space Agency and Russia have been able to send their probes to Mars.
NASA launched its unmanned MAVEN spacecraft toward Mars on November 18 to study the Red Planet's atmosphere for clues as to why Earth's neighbour lost its warmth and water over time.
India's Mangalyaan blasted off on November 5 and is using an unusual "slingshot" method for interplanetary journeys.
Lacking enough rocket to blast directly out of Earth's atmosphere and gravitational pull, it was orbiting the Earth until the end of November while building up enough velocity to break free.
ISRO chairman K. Radhakrishnan hailed Sunday's successful operation to slingshot out of Earth's orbit as a "major step" forward in India's low-cost space programme.
"(It is) a turning point for us, as India will foray into the vast interplanetary space for the first time with an indigenous spacecraft to demonstrate our technological capabilities," Radhakrishnan told AFP.
The cost of the project, at $73 million, is less than a sixth of the $455 million earmarked for NASA's Mars probe.
Two of the three phases of the Indian Mars mission have now been accomplished, according to ISRO's spaceport director MYS Prasad.
"The third important phase will be the capturing of Martian orbit in September 2014 for the five scientific experiments," Prasad told AFP from the spaceport of Sriharikota in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.
Mangalyaan is carrying a camera, an imaging spectrometer, a methane sensor and two other scientific instruments to search for signs of life on the Red Planet.
The Mars Orbiter Mission or Mangalyaan was revealed only 15 months ago by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, shortly after China's attempt flopped when it failed to leave Earth's atmosphere.
The timing and place of the announcement - in an Independence Day speech - led to speculation that India was seeking to make a point to its militarily and economically superior neighbour, despite denials from ISRO.

Im shocked. A bangladeshi saying bad words for india. We indians never say bad things about bangladesh. Bangladeshi youth should read true history how bangladesh came into real shape. Then say about india my dear frnd.@Bangali:
@Bangali: most definitely Bangladesh is progressing at a great pace and believe it @ Bengali we are so very proud of Bangladeshi's achievements.... other countries in SAARC region like Nepal, Pak etc. should learn from Bangladesh...... keep the good work going...... Another thing in which Bangladesh has been successful is keeping itself secular n progressive in spite of fundamentalism all around it & that is no mean achievement for a young country...
Congratulations India, instead of having hard feelings or jeliousy we are proud of you guys as you did lots of hard work and it finally paid you very profitable dividend. Now the space is no longer exclusive domain of the west.@rak:
@Pwned: Dont you dare call a "bengali" fake. We bengalis dont suffer from inferiority complex like you indians do, you really need to be rescued from this slum mentality.
@Maestro: @Jag Nathan:
First you criticize bengalis for immigration, then i give you a reality check on indians and you withdraw this statement saying its not illegal to immigrate Secondly, it is none of your business to interfere in bangladesh's affairs, if you would've done it anywhere in real life you would've faced harsh consequences. Thirdly, you are 1billion+ with nothing to do except prove non indians that india is a first world prosperous country. In real life most indians hate on India and consider it a big slum. Shows your inferiority complex. Fourthly, mars mission doesnt change the fact that around 70% of indians are living below poverty line and i think from the space you can see slums in india Lastly, in real life not a single indian can dare to say all these comments on anyones face, open youtube and see how indians are abused and insulted and they dont utter a word.Also, i notice the .PK domain at the end, where is your technology ? You have to rely on the sites of people you consider enemies. Enough with your hypocrisy, hindu cyber warriors.
This "Mars Mission" is nothing more than a CONSPIRACY by Indian RAW, aided by their "allies" the CIA and Mossad to show Pakistan in poor light (by comparison) -- certainly going by many of the comments one sees on the Internet these days... If this indeed were true, perhaps (for a change) it would be worthwhile for the "titans" of the Pakistan "ghairat brigade" like the Zaid Hamids and the DPC to seek the aid of these "conspirators" to assist their own country (or whatever is left of it) to make some decent progress in science and technology -- if I understand it correctly Zaid Hamid is a graduate of NED and Hafiz Saeed used to teach Physics ... surely they can relate to this somehow!
..and ours is on its way past Peshawar to Wazirstan.
@Bangali: You are keeping your citizenship since that's the only citizenship you will ever get. We Indians are accepted around the world and you guys are "denied". But my dear mullah since your skull cap has deprived you of all oxygen to brain you will spin this fact in imaginary way.
@Bangali: May be we are a source for cheap It services. Is that a crime? Its better than blowing off a crown of people praying in a mosque because they belong to the Shia or Ahmedi sect.
@Bangali: Be careful about the Pakistani factories. You know their primary export commodity is known as Jihadi. Be careful who you would like to go into bed with for you may wake up with a disease.
It is hilarious to see how one fake bangali has got indians completely worked up and spewing venom about Bangladesh
Mission Accomplished, brother Bangali! You ripped the mask of indi-bangla bonhomie right off their snarling faces.
This is very good news. Kudos to the scientists at ISRO. However, as an Indian, this news does not make me as happy and proud as it should. I would have rather preferred hearing news about the kind of concrete steps our governement is taking to deal with the rampant corruption, eradicate illitracy, improve healthcare for the masses, improve the basic infrastructure like water, electricity. But I know that our present UPA governement and the beaurocrats are so inept and corrupt that it is like wishful thinking.
While Pakistan is celebrating on the news that a "friendly nation" has offered to pay up for pakistan's side of Iran Pak pipeline.
@Pluralist: They do not beg or aid or loans for WB and IMF!
@Dhaka: @Pluralist: There are poor everywhere some more some less.that does not mean there can be no development or attention to science.Nations do not survive on religion,they survive on hardwork intelligence and rocket science does help in this as other wise all modern communication would stop if there were no satellites. Rocket and space is useful in helping better toilets and oh there are people with no toilets in Pakistan,Bangladesh and Indonesia as well.Do not make such a fuss on toilets.Look for better indicators and figures,not the butt end of life!
@Bangali: "So you are saying it is an aspiration for indians to dump their undeveloped country to move to America and work in KFC and McDonalds as a toilet cleaner".
A first for a Paki to call himself Bengali. The above quote exposes you.
@Paapi Ram: Yes I too on behalf of Pakistan apologize for carrying out Mumbai 26/11. Most of us are crazed with hate unfortunately
@Bangali: The amount of Nonsense that you speak has no bounds. Going to another country which is more developed is not a bad thing. You are in own country, because you cannot migrate. Sour Grapes!!!!
BTW, Indians in Europe and America have are more prosperous than the local white people in terms of per capita income, education and ownership of homes and business. In fact, Indians have the highest per capita income among the entire population. There may be some new Indians working in fast food joint, but they are all owned by other Indians too. I guess, you are the person cleaning other people's dirt so you only see people cleaning dirt too!!!!
You should first get your own language and religion before commenting on Indian culture. India has its own native languages, culture and religions. It is a primary civilization. That is something you will never know. You speak the Indian Aryan language of Bengali, follow an Arabic religion of Islam and have the audacity of calling yourself a Bengali. What a joke!!!! You are nothing but rootless userpers and converts!!!!
"What about your culture where Rs.2 hand made unhygienic idols are worshiped as Gods? "
Jeez, so much hate against someone's religion. You have just given yourself up. I am 200% sure that you are NOT a Bangladeshi. Now, it aint that difficult to guess who you really are.
TO ET : How can you let such a hate-filled comment on someone's religion get published ??
@Bangali:
Sir, I am amazed by your chest thumping.
It must be a heavy load to physically carry all of Bangladesh on your back.
i wish you all the best....
@Bangali: I apologize to you on behalf of all indians, many of us are crazed with hate unfortunately
@Raheel:
ET (RAW HQ) getting punished for this as we speak BRAVO
@bullshit buster: - We are Bengalis and it is an honour for us unlike you indians loving to be called an American or British to escape the inferiority of being an "Indian". - So you are saying it is an aspiration for indians to dump their undeveloped country to move to America and work in KFC and McDonalds as a toilet cleaner. - If you hate Arabs so much why do indians move to UAE, Saudi, Oman? To clean their dirt? - Islam uses arabic language so what ? you use english does that make you slave of white? - What about your culture where Rs.2 hand made unhygienic idols are worshiped as Gods? - Finally, you are an INDIAN what else do i need to say?
@Stealth: Take up his invitation and visit his village. It will help you become exposed instead of sheath.
@B: Cant SHOW you one indian, they are all hiding behind keyboards and when they come out their faces are different. Such hypocrite people. PTA take action.
@Bangali: Migrating from a less developed country like India to highly developed country like USA is not desperation but aspirational. Indians migrate to better places than India which is but natural. Even people from Europe migrate to USA.
'Indian' is and never will be a "swear" word in any country because of the great reputation of Indians all over the world. Who are you trying to fool with your nonsense. You need to get out of your house and see the world more often!!!!
BTW, you are Bangladeshi, NOT Bengali. The people of Bengal state in India are Bengalis. They embody the true and full cultural heritage of Bengali in its authenticity and adherence. Bangladeshi people are caricature of some Bengali and some Islam induced Semetic Arab culture.
@Bazinga: Bangladesh was always a GEOGRAPHICALLY SEPARATE country !! Mission to mars wont change your circumstances, you shall remain a cheap outsourced call center employee in your broken slums hungry watching Bollywood movies and commenting on ET. We are rising slowly & quietly as a industrial nation with every citizen on board. Soon you shall be praising and worshiping us like you do to the West.
@Shareef: Show me one Indian that cursed religion on magnificent ET.
Hindu dont talk about my country
ET is a pro-Indian site giving 1billion+ indians joy of taking out their hatred openly on pakistanis
So many of my non abusive and on topic comments are refused while indians cursing religion and pakistan are given a free hand. It seems the moderator is based in RAW HQ.
Its time PTA takes action against this site and ET moves to .in domain.
@alladitta: Here is another link for your interest. GM crops is mainly responsible for this horrific statistics about farmer suicide in India. Every 30 minutes one farmer takes his life away. The reason is the cobweb of debt that a farmer traps himself when he has to buy the GM crops seeds, the special GM crops fertilizers and the very special GM crops insecticides. It's a trap which the farmer finds it very difficult to break. Very sad situation. GM crops penetration in Pakistan have been thwarted so far. Government need to be aware of this monopolistic policies of GM crops.

@BalancedGuy: A country called pakistan living in utter shame of terrorism,drones,hatred,unemployment,poverty,polio disease,no history by itself,illiterate is talking about India !
There are more than 90 comments. The comments from Pakistani readers have not approved of India's action of trying to send a craft to Mars. What is the reason- is it inferiority complex? Or is it their worry for condition of India's poor which they feel would worsen after this launch? Or it will be harmful for Pakistan?
@Dhaka: And you are a Bangladeshi (Pakistan's aborted childcumcountry's resident) who is commenting on a Pakistani news article about the Indian mission to Mars. Bravo!
@vijay:
Firstly, you started this immigration topic, so let me remind you some facts. Secondly, Its not illegal but it shows how desperate indians are to migrate to other countries and take their citizenship. So much that "Indian" itself is now a SWEAR word in many countries. There are many indians who put -USA or -UK in a lame attempt to hide their identity (e.g. Raj - USA). The only thing you are good at is leaving self praising comments on non-indian sites to treat your inferiority complex. While rich indians despise all poor indians, we Bengalis consider all the same poor or rich doesnt matter, we inter marry, we live together and we work together. So next time do not even think of comparing to Bangladesh which ranks 100000 times better in equality and distribution of wealth than India can ever be in 10 centuries.
@alladitta: Is this the reason more than 200,000 thousand Indian farmers have committed suicides so far, daily 2000 farmers are committing suicides in India. This is truly shocking and startling. Don't give utopian and unrealistic figures and remarks. You need to read the articles given below.
http://www.ibtimes.com/india-losing-2000-farmers-every-single-day-tale-rapidly-changing-society-1232913 http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-08-22/india/414368451suicide-trend-punjabi-university-punjab-agricultural-university
i recently (last week) went to punjab province of pakistan and was shocked to see that -there is an average of two tractors, one jeep, one concrete house in pakistani village as compared to one tractor, two cars, three motorcycles, and a bunglow for each family (family with one to two children) in Indian Punjab. I am not even mentioning the English medium school in each village, mid day meals, clothing, books, bicycles for all school attending children, solar power for each household and electricity surplus environment. Pakistan you have been left behind, Accept the fact, stop living in the dream world. If anyone has a doubt, I will host you in my village, I come from poor farming family in Ferozepur, Punjab, India and I use Broadband. :))))).
Indian youth is lifting the Indians in IT and now in space science , our youth is lifting the party of a former cricketer with single digit IQ to "second largest party" in the country. Way to go Pakistani Youth!
A country needs to have focus on many fronts , be it science , education, industries, armed forces and welfare schemes and poverty alleviation etc, all of them go together, if india is spending on space exploration that doesnt mean govt is oblivious of poverty , as a nation with vision sometime you give aid (Afghanistan) and receive aid (UK etc) ,this is paradoxical reality. to alleviate poverty govt has started food safety Bill,MNREGA schemes and reforms in public distribution system etc, means govt is doing what it should do to reduce poverty but centuries of poverty cant be tackled in few decades, we have reached miles but still miles to be covered so space exploration is not an unnecessary expense, its a Must for India and best part the amount granted is amount being spent, means at least 70 mn $ are free from corruption and loot. We wish one day our Neighbour also send its mission to space and I will be the first to congratulate as science is for all humanity not for certain countries.
@ISRO Fan: let me guess is that why most indians are also commenting on all pakistani news here
@vijay: UK & US records show indians are the largest group of people applying for naturalisation and renouncing citizenship of third grade country with a space program. At least, we proudly keep our country's citizenship.
Mangalyan is on its way to Mars and even though it is covering a million kilometers a day, it will take nine long months to reach the destination. It will be a grueling wait for ISRO scientists till then, only subsequently they will have to get busy. This nine month period will be one of relative rest for all concerned.
@Bangali: For you H1 is illegal? shows how intelligent you are
@Bangali: I am talking about original Bangladeshis not Indian Bengali.Come here and see for yourself. As for factories in Bangladesh I have seen on BBC what type of sweat shops are there. Poor working conditions everyday there is fire. My friend was setting up textile mill in Bangladesh , he had to stop midway and leave your great country because you people have started killing Hindus.UN records show Bangladeshis are the largest illegal migrants in the world
I appreciate the sudden concern a lot of Pakistanis have about the poor people of India. The fact is India spent Rs.400 crores on the Mars Project. India this year spent Rs.900 crores as Haj subsidy so Muslims could go and pray in Mecca. The return on the Rs. 400 crore spent on the Mars Mission will be massive in the long run in terms of technological, scientific and defense spin-offs. It allows India also to stake a claim for a seat at the table of the most technologically advanced nations. There is no tangible benefit derived from the Rs 900 crores spent on Haj subsidies, especially when such largesse is not extended to Hindus, Sikhs and Christians. So tell me, should we cancel the Haj subsidies which bare no tangible benefits for a secular nation like India or should we cancel the Space Program with all its material and scientific spin-offs? We could divert Rs. 900 crores spent on Haj subsidies to built toilets for the poor since that is the most common lament of the majority Pakistani readers here.
@BalancedGuy: First of all your username is lame.
Second of all by IT do you mean International Terrorism?
@Chai: India begs for business. I work in IT company and indians literally beg us for doing business with them. Go to US or Europe, most Indians deny existence of India or Hinduism.
INDIAN INFERIORITY COMPLEX SYNDROME: - Show off lame space program on pakistani news site - Deny existence of any poverty in India - Vote for BJP hindu nationalist mass murderer - Apply for H1B visa and deny being Indian outside India
Got space program but still using pakistani domain
INDIANS commenting and liking in hyper keyboard warrior mode on PK site
@genesis: You are blaming bangladeshis, What about the 1000000s of illegal indians cleaning dirt in Saudi, UAE and other countries, not including H1B visas and 90% of McDonalds and KFC staff in Europe and America !!!! While ambani and mittal show off their billion dollar houses.
Talk about FACTS !!
@lol: 70% poverty rate and self praise is going out of control
@vijay: Dear, im not talking about indian bengalis, im talking about bangladeshis, come to bangladesh and see the massive industries being put up (even pakistanis are moving their industries here). Also see how the poor are getting immense benefits instead of wasting money on "space programs". Better yet just go to any nike or adidas store and see where their items are being made !!!!
Indians are the most self praising and boasting people i have ever seen. See UN statistics on poverty then talk.
Despite space mission indians homepage is a pakistani domain ET !!!
Sour Grapes: the attitude of affecting to despise something because one cannot or does not have it oneself
Pakistanis, you speak ill about most things Indian because of the above attitude.
And pakistan is competing with high school kids by sending cubesat.
World should wait to study life on Mars.......In few years the same martian condition will apply to Pakistan :)
@Indian: You are a living proof of Pakistanis who are so ashamed of their identity that they call themselves Indian. We Indian will take that as our success and a compliment. :)
@Pluralist: @Sp.ace: @Stellar: Thats the best you guys can ever come up with. When we go to moon you point at our poor people, when we go to mars you point to our poor people. When Indians are buying the most expensive real estates in London, you cry for our poor. Thank you my caring neighbors. Please do some charity to my countries poor or stop shedding crocodile tears for my poor fellow Indians.
@Pluralist: Kudos to you. Mumbai 26/11 = ''Non state actors". Begging = ''H1B''. Only a Pakistan can come up with this stupidity.
@scientist: @of all indians,,,india and indians can never grow beyond dreams and fictions,,,
@Pluralist: Like you we dont send jahadis to these countries. To work in call centre and software companies you need to be educated which your madrasa pass jihadis cant do.
@Bangali: Come to Gurgaon I will show you how advance you are. All maid servant, cart puller , Rikshah puller are Bangladeshis.You people push all your poor people to other country and call yourself advance
LOL at pakis ........ by 2015 india would have met its mdg goal of reducing poverty by half... pak is nowhere close.... with a poverty affecting 60% of people and hardly any middle class no wonder u people cant even make car engines on ur own..... again my question like i always.....and i am serious..... i will never come here if pakis answer 1 question.... ANY ONE POSITIVE DEVELOPEMENT IN PAK.......ANYONE.........perhaps the toughest to answer.....ANYONE... backward in healthcare,education,infra.....u seriously are a big shame.....
@mars.farce: @Final.frontier: @Stellar: You guys are totally ignorant of India's moon mission Chandrayaan 1 and quoting half-baked information.
Chandrayaan 1 was NOT a failure, but a total success in its first attempt itself. It actually REACHED the moon, planted India's flag on the moon (the fourth country to do so), and found traces of water in the moon ( the first country to do so).
{"Chandrayaan-1 Successfully Enters Lunar Orbit". ISRO. Retrieved 8 November 2008 ^ VOA News - Chandrayaan Lunar Probe detects water on Moon "Tricolour's 4th national flag on Moon". Economic Times. 15 November 2008. Retrieved 18 November 2008. "Chandrayaan-1 Starts Observations of the Moon". Space Daily. 24 November 2008. Retrieved 26 November 2008.}
The "failure" that you are quoting is the loss of the spacecraft AFTER it had orbited the moon for 8 months, not before it reached the moon!!!!
There are spinoffs from space programs which are vital to bolster self confidence, building technological and scientific infrastructure and also giving benefits to common people. For example, India was able to avoid heavy human toll ( 21 deaths) because of satellite monitoring of the recent Hurricane Palin . India was able to evacuate millions of people from costal region before the devastation struck. Compare this to the utter devastation In Philippines recently from Typhoon Haiyan which led to thousand of people dying . Technology and science advance by experience in recognizing mistakes .US in the initial days of space race with Soviet Union lost numerous rockets initially . Eventual objective of Mars mission may or may not be achieved but he technological capacity of India will progress for sure.
@mars.farce
Do you even know how to read? Please read through the article (link provided by you) and tell me where it says it was unsuccessful?
There were multiple missions for this project and chandrayaan finished most of them. The only thing it didn't finish (but it did partially finish) was mapping the entire lunar terrain.
I hope you know do understand when a scientific experiment or endeavour is termed as success or failure. If not then take of your hate filled glasses and may be you can start seeing things more clearly. And may be, just may develop a scientific temperament where you wont believe that cars run on water as fuel.
@Bangali: @Dhaka: (the second comment, not the first one)
I am a Pakistani and even I can sense that you are a West Pakistani.
I really don't get this. If successful, this mission will get India business worth billions of dollars. Next gen gets inspiration to go to science rather than fanatic religious schools like its neighbors. No unsolicited advice please! And the country least qualified to comment on these technology related matters is the first to comment on this!
@water bottle: empty bottles make the most noise !
What do you do whey you the lack mental capacity as you see in the other country? Try talking about lack of menial facility in that country.
@Waz: ET does cover Pakistan technological leaps like the worlds first water car and the proposal to generate electricity from jinns.
@Waz: dude, Pakistan should do these sort of technological feats instead of jihad and killing people and getting crazy over religion.
@Bangali: Sure it is more advanced which is why they are millions of illegal guys sneaking into India and make the country more poor by snatching the benefits .Stop illegal immigration if it is so well off.Again it is so well off that it has no place for Rohingya refugee muslims.
@Stellar: hahaha..Is that what they told you in your Madrassa..eh? India's Chandrayaan (moon probe) was hailed a huge success as it successfully achieved all its objectives including finding the evidence of water on moon, making India the first country to find any authentic evidence of water on moon. You should go to school rather than wasting time here..lol While India successfully reached the moon and now is on its way to mars, Pakistan is still debating on which day moon was sighted..lmao
Good luck India, for your journey towards Mars. We Indians and worthy people from Pakistan, instead of finding faults and throwing dirt at each other, should co-operate and consolidate our resources and move forward for the best.
India would cooperate with Pakistan readily, if the latter asks to arrange for one way trip for all jihadis and mullahs to Mars.
Now Pakistan will ask for their share in Mars too. (Get over Kashmir issue guys people are talking about manned missions to Mars these days)
Headlines around the world: Indian rocket travels to Mars Chinese gadget travels to moon US (NASA) rocket travels to Mars MNS travels to Afghanistan to assist Taliban Sherlock Homes: It is fundamental. It is all in the thinking (imagination) Watson.
These missions are nothing but advertisement to generate low tech business and to aspire student (future scientists) that dreams do come true.
@Pluralist: India doesn't beg for business, it wins it. Also at least we are internet collies .. but when we are in US we call ourselves Indian, unlike pakis who are so ashamed of themselves, they tell people they are Indians.
@Pluralist: @Sp.ace:
Dudes, ISRO is a profit centre for the nation. They earn money for the nation by launching satellites for foreign countries. This mission is to show the world capability of Indian technology and collaborate with the top level organisation in scientific and commercial development.
How can you think of a nation without satellites, agriculture, health , education, security .. all these sectors need satellites and expertise in space technologies. If we have to fight poverty we have to focus on research activities. Indians are doing a great job by investing in space research.
@all pakistanis our money , our rocket , our rulez . If you so concerned about our poverty . See yourself , your military expenditure 2.6% of gdp . Why don't you cut your defense budget and give it to poor as your country security is managed by usa drones only.
@ Waz : Get ready for the Indian chest thumping !!
What do you expect , if you publish Indian good news , obviously we will .
For Heavens sakes, please do not blame us Indians if ET has a penchant for Indian news for increasing their 'website Hits and foot falls" .... (not that I mind)
At any given moment ET & Dawn has at least four to five articles about or related to India (inc this one) . Right at this moment as I write the following Indian (and related) news are on the ET site. Is it our fault that your websites (and news channels) put up Indio-centric news for India hating Pakistanis to went their bile :-

Sriharikota is in Andhra Pradesh, not in Tamilnadu.
@Pops: Begging have turned or rather evolved into a new art form in India... now the government doesn't begs for aid, they beg for more H1B visas from the US government. More visa restrictions removal for internet coolies(read IT experts), they beg for more business for call centers from US so that more than 4 million internet coolies should earn a few hundred dollars a month(still many a times higher than the national earning). They beg for more concessions more commissions and more kickbacks from US and European companies.

What I liked so far is the kind of confidence shown by ISRO. They were ready to go without NASA support caused because of US shutdown issue. If you look at their website or Facebook page, their confidence is so delightful. This is rare in the Indian R&D scenario. This is going to take the Indian self belief to the next level. As @Feroz has pointed out, it will increase the interest in fundamental science and technology. At such moments, we should be humble rather than chest-thumpers.

@Waz:
Can you give us example about the ground breaking scientific development you are talking about in Pakistan?
Last time a pakistani made car that runs on water and it got way too much coverage.
@Pluralist: We may have mor poor in India, we are not begging from the world like you guys.
@ space @ Final Frontier: Saur grapes.
@Waz: '"ET how about more articles regarding Pakistani developments in the field of science and technology. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ You mean about water run automobiles?
@Dhaka: Care to taste one?......I guess only would would be enough transfer Dhaka from life driven city to the legends in history.
Zaid hamid claimed that pakistan will send its mission to moon within 5 years which is going to over.I think he might be right as chinese are sending its probe to moon tommarrow.May be some one from pakistan is hiding in the probe, never expect to return back.
@Dhaka:
...Nope, Pak has build and tested its own, otherwise you should say that the US cruise missiles and (all of the world cruise missiles for that matter) uses Nazi flying bomb technology of WWII
...and whats wrong with that, why should Pak get concern if India wants to go to Mars or fetch milk from Milky way???. Pak needs a deterrent, it has got it, it has a modest space programme largely focused on satellite / communication technology and that is good. Even, if one looks closely one can commend Pak for doing remarkably in field of space sciences owing to its mere resources both in Human and in Capital.
regards,
Indian mission craft on way to mars, US mission craft on way to pakistan.Both same objectives,one searching for methane and other seraching for bad guys.
This is what a neutral and bipartisan report says about the earlier sent mission to moon. It was a failure. “The mission has been terminated,” Shivkumar said by telephone from Bangalore, adding computers on the craft failed.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=anHW54NyN9Y4
Well done India. A big clap from Pakistan. You people have one of the best engineering schools in the world. That is the fruit of it. We have one of the largest seminaries in the world and we have the fruit of it.
Congradulation india for your achievement.
People who are racing backwards fast in time to reach 700 A.D will never understand the significant of this mission. Afterall, for them science does not matter. Only hatred and killing.
Bangladesh is more advanced than India any day, we just don't engage in self boasting
Meanwhile, 67% of indians are living below poverty lines with no access to toilets Source: Indian Government Statistics
Just a way to show the world that India now has ICBM Technology. Rest is just PR.
Shame on us Indians for doing this, we should focus first on the massive poverty in our country. We are not a developed nation yet, please fellow Indians accept reality !!
Is it a National pride and pastime to quote articles of 2009.
@Waz: And get ready for the smell of burning of Paki 'you know what'....LOL....Also get ready for Paki lectures on Indian poverty, human development, backwardness, etc.
@Stellar: The news article you have given link to is from Xinhua news agency, which is Chinese. What else can you expect from a Chinese reporter? The Chandrayaan mission was hailed as a great success by the world space scientists and the mission demonstrated for the first time presence of water on moon. When contact was lost with Chandrayaan one year after launch, more than 95% of the mission objectives were fulfilled. Hence it was a success.
@Sp.ace @Pluralist
Funny how Pakistanis suddenly remember poor people of India at times like this.
For your information, ISRO is profitable by launching satellites of other countries and it funds all its projects by itself. It is not wasting taxpayers money.
@Pluralist
You always talk about our poverty . But we may be poor but we have freedom that you don't have . And you also forgot that largest number of middle class people with purchasing power are in India. More than that we doesn't have drones like you . So you guys see inside your house before sneaking into neighbour house. If it is failed also we are happy that they are doing something . You guys started your space agency before us but still now nothing special . Even our space programmes are publishing in your newspaper and other nation newspaper . What other nation publish about your nation just see : www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-24500286. And et come on have guts mean publish this.
@Sp.ace: @Final.frontier: Chandrayaans loss of contact before landing on moon?? Before finding water on moon? Grow up. Read the full story.
The method used by isro to launch orbitor has never been used before as it needs almost 5 to 6 orbit raising operation which are very complex so congrats to isro,but according to me biggest news of this year will be success of gslv than mars mission because due to lack of this technology india has to outsource its mission to europe but with this technology isro will able to earn lot due to its cheap cost like we earn with pslv.
India mission to moon Chandrayaan failed earlier.
"The mission is definitely over. We have lost contact with the spacecraft," said Project Director of the Chandrayaan-1 mission M Annadurai.

ET how about more articles regarding Pakistani developments in the field of science and technology. At the rate at which Indian events are covered we might as well rename the URL for this site to www.tribune.co.in
Get ready for the Indian chest thumping !!
'More poor' in India than Africa. Why the Indian government doesn't realizes that to stand tall in the comity of Nations, one need to spend more on Human development. These kind of spectacles are not done by countries like Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Belgium and i can count many more but they are developed countries with a welfare state stature. The space program in India is more about boasting and spectacle.

First things first... spend on human development than on space.
There are more poor people in eight states of India than in the 26 countries of sub-Saharan Africa, a study reveals today.
More than 410 million people live in poverty in the Indian states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, researchers at Oxford University found. The "intensity" of the poverty in parts of India is equal to, if not worse than, that in Africa.

I'm not sure why this is a news. Until the object reaches Mars space and gets hooked into Mars gravitational sphere, it should not be highlighted.
definitely not worthy of a front page news.
What if it fails. don't forget that abt 60% of Mars mission are failures.
@Dhaka: The space mission si not about the advancement in space technology, it's more about a spectacle to boast about.

@Dhaka: Indian earlier sent mission to moon 'Chandrayan' ended in a failure. Hope for the success this around. http://www.moondaily.com/reports/ChandrayanIMissionFailureSetbackForIndia_999.html
Around midnight ISRO Scientists managed to get the spacecraft Mangalyan successfully out of the Earths orbit and on its way to Mars. This a delicate exercise and many global missions failed as they could not get the thrust to take it out of Earths orbit. Now there are unlikely to be any hitches as it makes its nine month journey to Mars. It is pertinent to note that no country could succeed in the Mars mission on first attempt, if Indians can do it the World would sit up and notice. Even Chinese and Japanese missions have failed in their attempts so far. What is remarkable is that Indians have been able to launch such a mission at a cost of just $ 74 million, a mere 25% of what others spent. More importantly the success is very essential to ignite the flagging interest of students in Science subjects, very essential if any country wants to challenge global leaders in Technology. Science can go a long way in contributing to the reduction of Poverty and spread of knowledge. All such efforts should be applauded and commended.
India is achieving its technological capabilities in space, while pakistan still testing chinese or north korean missiles, which is of no use other than called as a deterent.
This should not be seen as india vs china thing or even against pakistan. It only shows we asians are moving ahead in different fields which westerners have always dominated, though these are just modest steps we need to move in this direction only.
Gud luck..
