Addressing the Rabta Committee , Hyderabad’s Zonal Committee and other departments, he said that government should retract the ordinance so that no human rights violations can occur under it.
The MQM chief said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had been requested in 1998 that special courts should not be formed, but he didn't pay heed. Eventually, Nawaz himself was sentenced under such special courts.
Under the ordinance, people can be detained for up to 90 days.
Even though the ordinance has been passed by the President, Altaf asked who will be responsible if people lose their lives after becoming victims of violence during the investigations?
He appealed to the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to declare the Ordinance as illegal.
The MQM chief condemned the arrest of MQM Surjani Town’s Sector in-charge Islamul-Haq and said that MQM which had been making efforts for peace and order in the country was being targeted while people who consider terrorists to be martyrs were allowed to stage protests.
