The government on Monday officially notified the appointment of Barrister Akram Sheikh as prosecutor in the treason case against former Military ruler General Pervez Musharraf. Sheikh will lead the legal team of the government — which is complainant in the case.
The law ministry notified Sheikh’s appointment. Sheikh’s office confirmed that intimation had already been received, while the notification in the written form would arrive on Tuesday.
Three days ago, Sheikh had given his consent to the prime minister to lead the prosecution against Musharraf in the treason case. A three-member special court headed by Justice Faisal Arab would hear the treason case under Article 6 of the Constitution.
Musharraf was accused of subverting the constitution of Pakistan when he imposed emergency in the country on November 3, 2007, and detained judges of the superior judiciary. The government decided to form the special court after Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) submitted its inquiry report against him.
