None of my dogs would kill wantonly (though they do chase butterflies and the occasional cat); none of them would bite the hand that feeds them; none of them would gleefully smile as they saw one of their own being put to the knife; or axe; or Kalashnikov. They are gentle, wonderful beings and I have always disagreed with those who say heaven is only meant for humans, particularly for us Muslims.
I have also believed that if that is so, there simply has to be a dog heaven, where these good creatures would return to the bosom of their Creator after their time is up on this earth. So, you can imagine my joy, nay delight, to hear Maulana Fazlur Rehman, consummate politician and erudite son of the great Maulana Mufti Mahmood whose admirer I have been since the 70’s when he was chief minister of then NWFP, say that even dogs will become martyrs (provided the Americans killed them, of course).
While I would wish that dogs, and other animals most of which are nobler than many human beings had their own heaven to go to, the Maulana has pronounced and so it shall be. The intelligent and well-spoken Jan Achakzai can turn cartwheel upon cartwheel saying what the Maulana said was mere ‘rhetoric’, the fact is that he has said it.
Mr Munawar Hassan of the JI had just before the Maulana said that, of course, Mehsud was ‘shaheed’ and the Maulana not to be outdone said what he did. Good on him, I say again.
However, Their Eminences will have to explain to the country, and specially to the mothers and sisters and wives and children and fathers and daughters and sons and brothers of our poor murdered men in uniform, and to those of the thousands of innocent civilians of whichever faith, wantonly killed and maimed too, why they consider Hakimullah Mehsud a ‘martyr’. Being democrats, they must also explain how someone who rejected democracy, even our Constitution and state, could possibly be a ‘martyr’?
But leave the ‘shaheeds’ to those who manufacture them as a matter of political expediency, that is hardly any of our business, us lay Pakistanis who send their children to school in the morning and pray to the Almighty to return them home unharmed at the end of the day: no story about dogs is complete without recalling the loyalty of an Akita (a Japanese breed) named Hachiko who stayed with his master for barely a year and demonstrated his loyalty all his remaining life. Verbatim from Wikipedia:
“In 1924, Hidesaburõ Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo, took in Hachikõ, a golden brown Akita, as a pet. During his owner’s life, Hachikõ greeted him at the end of each day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno did not return. The professor had suffered from a cerebral hemorrhage and died, never returning to the train station where Hachikõ was waiting. Each day for the next nine years Hachikõ awaited Ueno’s return, appearing precisely when the train was due at the station.
“Hachikõ attracted the attention of other commuters. Many of the people who frequented the Shibuya train station had seen Hachikõ and Professor Ueno together each day. Initial reactions from the people, especially from those working at the station, were not necessarily friendly. However, after the first appearance of the article about him on October 4, 1932 in Asahi Shimbun, people started to bring Hachikõ treats and food to nourish him during his wait. (Hachiko died in March 1935).
“In April 1934, a bronze statue in his likeness was erected at Shibuya Station, and Hachikõ himself was present at its unveiling. The station entrance near this statue is named ‘Hachikõ-guchi’, meaning ‘The Hachikõ Entrance/Exit’, and is one of Shibuya Station’s five exits. The exact spot where Hachikõ waited in the train station is permanently marked with bronze paw-prints and text in Japanese explaining his loyalty.”
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, much gnashing of teeth and furious speech-making have been going on after the sad demise of Hakimullah Mehsud through a Pakistan sovereignty-infringing drone, and vehement shouts of stopping the Nato supplies are being raised. Could those who are demanding this please consider the following:
Minister of State for Commerce, and good man, Khurram Dastgir Khan said on November 6 that the grant of GSP + Status by the EU would give Pakistani products, especially textiles, access to additional markets. “We are expecting $700 million to $1 billion additional exports to the EU,” he said. Pakistan exports to EU countries stood at $6 billion last year by the way.
Forty-seven countries have troops in Afghanistan, most members of the EU, on a UN mandated ‘mission’. Still want to block Nato, gentlemen? AND invite even MORE sanctions? Some little sense is called for, sometimes. Truculence and contrariness never helps in dealing with other states, specially those you trade with and those who keep you supplied with lots of stuff including those lovely F-16s!.

According to Kamran Shafi, in order to be considered a ‘martyr’ one must adhere to democracy and love everything about the agenda outlined by the nationalist feudal constitution of Pakistan.
Excellent article, especially reference to 'biting the hand that feeds them'. Bravo major sahab!
What is the latest on Kamran sb's stint as Pakistani High Commissioner to UK? He went from anti-army articles to pro-army articles when the news was 'hot'. Now he has switched to 'neutral' position & writing on dogs! May be the decision is not yet final!
@usman:
I am impressed with the depth of your knowledge Sir. Really!
Would you be kind enough to enlighten me with your answers to just a few questions?
What objections do you have to India's "hegemonic tendencies"? Would Pakistan NOT have "hegemonic tendencies" if it were in India's position? Why? How would you describe Pakistan's interference in Kashmir? How would you describe Pakistan's desire for 'Strategic Depth' in Afghanistan?Thanks.
@mind control: Dear mind control, As usual you got it wrong, and missed out on the subtlety of what I was saying so I have to give you another English lesson. I could just as easily have stated: "being a woman does not protect you from female dislike in a political forum". I doubt if you will get it, but at least I have tried. You obviously know how to look up a dictionary. You just have trouble understanding what it is telling you. You should stick with comic books, but even then you would probably be in trouble. Better still, perhaps you could attempt to determine what Kamran Shafi was really saying, or do we just have to accept that he is a dog lover and that is all. On the other hand maybe we should forget that, and I just accuse you of MISANDRY.
Madam GP,
The world asked for visas from Pakistan to go to siachen. This resulted in heartburn for India which considered this "an invasion" or "possible invasion" or "intent for invasion" or "invasion to justify indian invasion". Since when did foreign mountain climbers become an invasion force.
And just as you have explanation for encroachment in siachen, you will justify sikkim, goa, hyderabad and a dozen other hegemonic tendencies.
Ever heard of the enclaves in bangladesh? encroachment on Nepal near Kalapani river?
Not everyone in Pakistan is illiterate and can be easily fooled by your 24/7 self-serving, commentary on our newspapers.
@Sexton Blake:
A. if you have any advise upon how to get social security benefits I would be very grateful. My Government’s Social Security Department is really mean spirited, will not give me a dime
Oh! That is easy indeed. This is how you get a 'Stipend' in your home country.
http://tribune.com.pk/story/210827/lejs-malik-received-monthly-stipend-from-punjab-govt/
B. Also, being female does not protect one from misogyny in a political forum.
Knock, Knock!! Anyone home?
Misogyny means 'Unreasonable Hate for Women'. Being a 'Woman' is certainly NOT a protection against misogyny. It is, on the contrary, an essential condition. Please look up Oxymoron.
@Yasir Khalid: You are raising very valid points especially about the hygene and the awareness of the spirtual purity of the dog owner. I wonder though, what relevance this has for a military man who has been trained to kill the enemy? By the way the dogs do not bother me, I am at ease with them. They are real pals.

@gp65:
Please accept my heartfelt apologies for assuming that your personal details given by @John the Baptist: in his adverse comment were true. I had no reason to make any such an assumption. It was naive of me to do that, and I owe you my sincerest apologies.
@gp65: Dear gp65, I must admit that what I was writing was somewhere between facetious and satire. I really have no interest in social security, except that I have noticed Scrooge got his training in a similar environment. However, I have noticed for some time that many of the inputs are totally unrelated to the topic in question, and with my views being somewhat different from the majority I tend to have insulting, unrelated remarks made about me. Also, being female does not protect one from misogyny in a political forum. One has to develop a thick skin and fight back. Just stick with it.
Dogs are 100% impure, whether you agree or not. On medical grounds and several reason which could only be understood when your spiritual purity is intact. You can feed them you can take care of them but you have to be careful for yourself too. Saliva of the Dogs is believed to be highly dangerous for human and causes extreme impurity. It is a Satanic tool to keep angels away from you who are always praying for your salvation and saving you from possible threats (much to do with the reflexes). People loving dogs are doing no sin, but when they cross limit and allowing dogs to lick them then the problem begins. We all know that if bitten by a mad dog how dangerous the condition of the victim would be if not treated timely.
@John the Baptist: That is a misogynistic comment with no bearing in our modern world. Also Social Security primarily benefits children and it is difficult for an adult to make a living from Social Security. If you do not believ me, read the many articles out there bursting this myth.
John The Baptist: Are you really a Christian? I have read your comments before and you seem to far from a Christian. Why do you wish to malign my community?
@John the Baptist: @GP65: @Arsoo: Dear John, I tend to agree with you that some of GP65s, and others, comments are not what I would write, but generally would not comment on personal aspects of their lives except to make it known that I wonder about their IQ level. However, in your favor this is virtually a debating forum, and if people cannot handle the heat in the kitchen they should get out. Incidentally GP65, without being patronizing, I think your IQ is very good. I look forward to more jousts with you, and if you have any advise upon how to get social security benefits I would be very grateful. My Government's Social Security Department is really mean spirited, will not give me a dime, and has Scrooge like tendencies. In regard to Kamran Shafi's article, I am still trying to make sense out of the convoluted mixed metaphors, and lack of connectivity with whatever he thinks he is writing about. Maybe Kamran is ready to go on Social Security benefits also, or is this getting too personal? If he is let us hope his government is more generous than mine. Incidentally Arzoo, do you think that "numbers" is a pseudonym for a female also? No, he can't be. No self respecting, educated female would keep writing "WOW"
@Shahbaz Asif Tahir: And what is wrong in being secular and/or liberal? Your musings?
@John the Baptist:
"Gp65 also knows a lot about US social security and its solvency! As a matter of fact, she can enrich your intellect on almost anything under the blue sky. Being divorced and living on benefits is a great motivator in life to turn to hyper nationalism!"
Did you think hyper-nationalism is a sole preserve of insecure adolescents whose frustrations find perfect match in the quest for being "pak" by ridiculing others?
@Arzoo: It is always refreshing to read the articles as well as the commentry of the bloggers regardless of their origin, as long as they represent the genuine opinion or the feelings of people. It is not necessary to speculate about the people or the motives behind their commentries. However, you will agree that the repetition of the transcripts from other news media is rather boring forcing even the super journalists like the Major to write about dogs.
Rex Minor
Mr.Egoistical can you give us a Road Map. What would you have done under the circumstances. I can guess. Kept on taking the beating.
@Arzoo: Agree 100%.
@Rex Minor: & you are one of them.
@John the Baptist: I hope Gp65 does not grace your below-the-belt comment with a response. The comment you have written can only come from someone who either knows Gp65 personally or is making a wild guess. If you know about her personally then your comment is foul, offensive, ungentlemanly, and beneath contempt. If you are guesstimating, then your comment is even worse and shows your character.
Readers of ET are fortunate to have Gp65 and other Indians comment on our news items and articles because they present another side of the story looked at from a different angle. Though their comments are understandably not always objective, from our point of view, they promote intelligent debate and broaden our perspective. I believe that you are just upset because as the "Poor Indian" stated, Gp65's comments are "articulate, precise and ‘no nonsense.'
Shafisahab, Generally, the names that end in 'ko' are girls' names. ko means child. So it is worthwhile to check if Hachiko was a male or a female of the specie. I know many Japanese girls' names that end in ko!
@John the Baptist:
Your post Sir, tells everyone very little about Gp65 that is not known, but considerably more about yourself that was unknown so far.
@Poor Indian:
No nonsense but not factual or original either, a collection of unedited garbage at times.
Rex Minor
@John the Baptist - We also know a lot of shenanigans about the Catholic church and the fake John the baptist. Do you want us to enrich your knowledge?
A topi-drama of the highest order. All these so called drone haters and stand-ups for the country's sovreignity are the ones who have put the country in this situation by looting and plundering it. Maulana Diesal is on top of this list. They keep their wealth abroad in US dollars and hate US to the hilt, while having green cards and other country's citizenship. Can Imran Khan honestly declare that he does not have British passport? They will block the roads from which NATO containers don't pass.
US should just nuke all of Pakistan and get over with it. Then all ghairatmand Pakistanis will be 'shaheed' and the world will have what it wants. Win-win situation.
While the former Major has placed a great emphasis on loyalty of dogs, I notice that he did not tell us his about the intelligence of his dogs. Let me give him a shock by stating that while most of the dogs categories are plain stupid and will do almost anything that the master commands; the only exception being are the so called Afghan dogs!! They would ignore the silly commands of sit and walk if they are unnecessary.
Rex Minor
@Poor Indian:
Gp65 also knows a lot about US social security and its solvency! As a matter of fact, she can enrich your intellect on almost anything under the blue sky. Being divorced and living on benefits is a great motivator in life to turn to hyper nationalism!
the more i know people , the more i end up liking my dog
As a lover of dogs,( I have nothing to say about Pakistan's political situation that has led to the controversy) let me tell people that dogs can not be taught to hate and change loyalty. We, human beings, have no right to insult a noble creature like a dog!
Wah jee wah! Kamran Sahib, why not talk about dogs a little more, they sure are better creatures of God than some of these bipeds with numb skulls. By the way I live all the time with what you say about your Mister, Bella and Henry, and am beneficiary of love & affection; kindness & loyal devotion of my beloved Labrador Tucker. I'm sure that his Creator must be proud of such a wonderful creation like I'm to be by Tuckers selfless presence in and around my life. I truly believe that we all must keep dogs and learn from them some of their wonderful qualities and leave the maulanas fight among themselves to define their version of right and wrong.
Second attempt : Loved the bit on Hachiko......excellent mone made with the same name and Richard Gere did the part of the professor.
@salman: Your comments are equal to " I am alight Jack".
Rex Minor
wait until (god forbid) a drone kills one of your children, then I'll ask whether you care for money or a human life.
@jilal: Feel sorry for you ...
We humans are weird creature. We take some animals to bedroom and others to the oven.
I think the writer has used the term "sanctions" metaphorically.
@gp65: I like the way you write - articulate, precise and 'no nonsense'.
Thanks Kamran, for this beautiful piece of writing. I too am a dog lover (of 78 years' standing – no less!), but I could have never penned as wonderful a tribute to the greatest friend-of-man, as you have done.
My love for Dogs compels me to add just a little bit. I believe all Shaheeds end up in Jannat finally. So, Hakimulla Mahsud (HM) has already reserved his place by getting killed by the US (as per SdMH), but all dogs have their reservations ordained, irrespective of the circumstances of their death. And, there has to be a separate Jannat for dogs because none of them will tolerate the proximity of the likes of HM. Allah very well knows their likes and dislikes. You agree?
@KDP: I have dogs and I spend reasonable amount of money on their care but at the same time I give reasonable amount to charities who look after disable, orphans and old folks. We must have balance in our life. Its our duty to take care of Disable, Children, old people, pets and animals. Giving everything to humans and not caring pets does not make sense in a civilized society.
If you gave up the desire to snatch Kashmir from India –
neither would you need to put your pride and sovereignty at stake to get the free F16s nor would you need to support the madrassas that create jihadis.
Wish you would support humans in your country with the money you might be spending on dogs !!!
For once words fail me.
All these 'liberals' kick off with Fazlur Rehman and end up bashing Imran Khan. I always wonder why. Please also bash that upper house and lower house who passed joint resolution against drones and nato supply. Please also ask why after salala incident nato supply was blocked when aid was so desired to us.
Ahh and we cannot live without aid. what a shame. Kindly read William Easterly scholarly articles on how beneficial is foreign aid for economic growth of a nation.
Only agree with you about the part that dogs are loyal, faithful, tolerant and astute. More patriotic than most of our self serving politicians/army/media, etc.
Mister, Bella, Henry and Fritz are the names of dogs owned by a thoroughly confused brown sahib. Post colonial Pakistan still hasn't shed the masters' habits and culture.
@Shahbaz Asif Tahir: And of course you were all set to explain to all of us where you disagree with the author about any of the pertinent points he made about reality (or more precisely the lack of) in Pakistan, BUT then your keyboard ran out of ink (or you had no answers!)! BTW, do YOU consider Mehsud to be a martyr after leading a group that has slaughtered so many Pakistanis ?????
Dear Sir, Thank you for the following two words you have used in your article :- rambunctious which means difficult to control or handle; wildly boisterous, and truculence which means A disposition or apparent disposition to fight, especially fiercely. This a first time I heard about these words.I looked it up straight away. Also thank you to ET.This is a great place for us to learn good English.
No sir. I don't want to stop drones or block NATO supplies. I want to carry on being subservient to USA. I dont ever want our sher prime minister to raise his voice against the Americans or, God forbid, even look the president of USA in the eye. Let us carry on as we are. So what if some innocent people die in drone attacks. So what if the sons of alleged terrorists decide to take up arms against pakistan...and thier sons and thier sons. Doesn't matter..drones will get them all. I just hope that these terrorists don't move to Lahore or islamabad.....I don't want drones in my neighbourhood!!
NATO supplies should be blocked immediately. According to the official stance of Pakistan government, U.S drone strikes are against our will and against our national sovereignty. If so, what sense does it make to allow an attacker an access through your roads to create enemies for us. You cannot sell yourself dignity for money, then you should be called a prostitute. Because that is the only way you know how to earn money then.
A shameful write up. Honestly this author, is secular, liberal, nuisance that we have been constantly experiencing ever since Pakistan, was hijacked by Bhuttoism, and now the shameful Sharif's.
ETBLOGS1987
*"Still want to block Nato, gentlemen? AND invite even MORE sanctions? "**
More sanctions implies that currently Pakistan is under some sanctions. It is not. It has never been. Even the 90s after Russia withdrew from Afghanistan when Pakistan believes it was sanctioned is simply a time when Pakistan stopped received freebies. TO understand what sanctions look like - look at Iran.
"Some little sense is called for, sometimes. Truculence and contrariness never helps in dealing with other states, specially those you trade with and those who keep you supplied with lots of stuff including those lovely F-16s!."
If you gave up the desire to snatch Kashmir from India - neither would you need to put your pride and sovereignty at stake to get the free F16s nor would you need to support the madrassas that create jihadis. Nor would you have a need for strategic depth in Afghanistan which makes you give shelter to Haqqanis (you did hear about one who was staying in Islamabad and got killed recently and the ones that got droned today in Hangu?). If Pakistan did not create jihadis within itself and provide safe haven to Haqqanis and Quetta Shura, there would be no drones.
Please do remember that post 2014, US will not forget where Dr. Haqqani was living peacefully, where OBL was found and the fact that Hakimullah Mehsud was living within 1 km of Pak army headquarters in NWA. Keeping the lines of supply open will simply delay the day of reckoning not prevent it for ever.
Oh and by the way since you have opined about Imran's reaction to the drone - would you care to also speak about your new masters - PML-N? Any opinion about what Ch. Nisar said or for that matter what Sartaj Aziz said just yesterday?
Is the purpose of this article, having a philosophical discourse on dogs!
Kamran Sahib what a wonderful article on dogs even though I don't own or keep a dog , I do consider them God's creature's on Earth, I would prefer them any day to the two legged Creatures with hairy faces who call them selves a Maulana's. Drones, nothing wrong with what the U.S. is doing as far as I can tell , what is wrong is that the Pakistani Leadership is not upfront about their Drone policy It is about time Mr. Sharif and the Establishment come out in the open and tell the people of Pakistan the truth !
In one of the cells in Frankfurt Zoo there is sign which says: Dogs never forget if you have done anything nice to them- That is the major difference between humans and dogs. I know many in Pakistan do not like people who have dogs as pets. But that has another reason, i am told. Pakistanis only like animals that they can eat. Or is it just a joke?
