The police constables had stopped the motorcyclists near Nadria Hotel in Nazimabad No.2 when at least two suspects opened fire, said Nazimabad SHO Rao Ehsan. As a result, 40-year-old Rahat and 50-year-old Muhammad Siddiq died while sub-inspector Mir Muhammad was injured. With multiple bullet wounds, the police personnel were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where the doctors pronounced them dead. Mir was also in critical condition until Monday evening.
The police officials have, however, yet to ascertain which group the suspects belonged to. SHO Ehsan admitted they don’t have much information on the culprits as they escaped immediately after the firing.
This year has proved to be deadlier than any year for the law enforcers as nearly 150 of them have so far been gunned down in various parts of the metropolis.
Besides targeting the policemen individually, various major incidents of targeting police vans have also occurred. In most of these cases, the suspects open fire when the policemen stop them for snap-checking.
Other killings
At least five more people were killed in target killings and violence in the city on Monday. Thirty-year-old Shaheryar alias Sherry and Mallu, 32, were shot dead in the Iqbal Market area of Orangi Town. Police officials said that the deceased, Shaheryar, was a police informer while Mallu was a cable operator by profession.
Similarly, 35-year-old Muhammad Ali was shot dead in Altaf Nagar in Manghopir. In another incident, Akbar, 28, son of Maula Buksh was shot dead in Eidu Lane area of Lyari’s Baghdadi locality apparently by Lyari gangsters over suspicions of being a police informant. In Lyari, another man who has yet to be identified was shot dead near Juna Masjid in Kalri.
