KARACHI: Defending champions KRL continued their impressive run in the Pakistan Premier Football League (PPFL) as they defeated Navy 1-0 at the Korangi Baloch Ground yesterday.

Both teams took the first-half warming up after a week-long break in the league. The match took a crucial turn in the 52nd minute when the referee showed red cards to Navy’s Jabbar Hussain and KRL’s Mehmood Khan for indiscipline.

However, Mohammad Qasim scored the winner in the 73rd minute to seal the match for KRL.

KRL are touted as the strongest team among 16 competitors this year, and coach Tariq Lutfi said he is aware that other teams target them as they consider them their biggest threat.

KRL became the first Pakistan club to play the final of the Asian Football Confederation President’s Cup, and also left their mark in Malaysia as an emerging club team at the tournament.

“Every team is playing very seriously against us,” Lutfi told The Express Tribune. “It’s a good thing for the league, now the level of competition has certainly improved. Every side wants to defeat us to prove their worth. Navy were also very determined to win against us.

“However, we are under pressure these days as the team’s captain Samar Ishaq is injured and my key strikers have missed a lot of opportunities in the previous matches. We have to register a big win soon.”

This was KRL’s fourth win out of six matches in the league and they now have 14 points.
