KATI places losses at Rs2 billion for two days of power outages

KARACHI: Unannounced and uninterrupted power outages by the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) in industrial areas have created tremendous hardships for industries in the last two days.

Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) Patron In-Chief S M Muneer, Chairman Syed Johar Ali Qandhari, Vice Chairmen Salimuz Zaman and Shahid Javed Qureshi have said that industries in KATI alone have had to suffer a loss of two billion rupees due to massive power outages in the Korangi industrial area.

The chairman of KATI’s sub-committee on KESC, Najmul Arfeen, has demanded that KESC officials immediately restore power to the industrial area and not resort to unannounced and abrupt power outages as they would cause irreparable losses to the economy and many industries would shut down.

KESC’s deputy CEO, Aamir Zia, assured KATI representatives that the power supply would be normalized within 24 hours.

The chairman and vice chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) have also expressed concern about the four hours of outages in industrial areas which the KESC started a couple of days ago without  any intimation or   consultation with the industry  despite  earlier   assurances  that  the industry will be exempt from outages.

PTA representatives said that the outages will render labour idle for half the day, increase production costs and delay shipments of ordered goods to foreign customers.
