Previously, the iconic Ms. Marvel comic belonged to the immensely popular character 'Carol Danvers'. But Marvel announced a relaunch of Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel, leaving vacant Ms. Marvel.
The boots will now be filled by the all-new character of Kamala Khan, a 16-year old Muslim girl who takes on the title after discovering that she possesses shape-shifting abilities.
IGN described the expected new series, "In true teen hero tradition, Kamala struggles with her parents' high expectations and her desire to carve out her own identity even as her new found powers open up a completely different world."
The new series will be written by G. Willow Wilson, a writer who has channeled her own experiences as a Muslim woman into comics like Cairo and Air. Joining her is artist Adrian Alphona, who co-created the Runaways with Brian K. Vaughan and has most recently been seen on Uncanny X-Force.
Series editor Sana Amanat talked about the inspiration behind Kamala. "The inspiration for the new Ms. Marvel series stemmed out of a desire to explore the Muslim-American diaspora from an authentic perspective and yet, this story isn’t about what it means to be a Muslim, Pakistani or American...This is ultimately a tale about what it means to be young, lost amidst the expectations bestowed upon you, and what happens when you get to choose."
But according to Superherohype, Wilson says “Captain Marvel represents an ideal that Kamala pines for. She’s strong, beautiful and doesn’t have any of the baggage of being Pakistani and ‘different.’”
However, Sana Amanat describes Kamala's family as conservative. “Her brother is extremely conservative. Her mom is paranoid that she’s going to touch a boy and get pregnant. Her father wants her to concentrate on her studies and become a doctor.”
The new Ms. Marvel series will debut in February of 2014 but she will first appear in the upcoming "All-New Marvel NOW! Point One Special."

There are already many muslim Superhero's in DC Universe and Marvel, so it's not a new story. One of them is DUST, she is a woman from Afganistan and her costume is a burka, she is pretty cool, another is a famous DC Comic superhero Green Lantern, who is a African American muslim. There are many in the 99 Squad too, so this is not a big deal!!
Is Kamala Khan can stop drones, and use her shape shifting power to rid us of all ills, am all for it.
@S:
We have already become a joke in the entire world. If you want to take this further, then please free to do so.
Naturally this is a Mossad/CIA/RAW conspiracy to defame the maulanas in Pakistan - rather than empower women it is an attempt to destroy Muslims in Pakistan through this bidah stuff (there you go thats for the trolls :) Happy)
And realistically - fab attempt at trying to positively educate the young and give tehm more self confidence and belief in themselves to move themselves and their society forward!
And these things will continue to happen until Muslims are weak. We need to unite people!
And yes we need to start writing a comic about white women (previous psot)
I want some one to write a comic about a white women conversion, how she left that filth behind and started wearing hijab or niqab. And yes there are many examples there just in britain alone.
Quite a change from the last Ms Marvel who look was tailored for young American male - blond with abnormally large breast showing lots of skin.
"Kamala" - a.k.a "Lotus" in Sanskrit / Hindi / Marathi / Gujarati / Tamil / Malayalam... a "Hindu" name!
Love the irony of it!!
@ironMan!: khan is not even a clan just a title
Kamalala Khan
Whatever, she should not go a rescue mission without a mehrab.
@BlackJack: *Thank you
@Syed Zain Ali: That you - I am aware of that. That is precisely my point - there is no such thing as a clan of Khans.
If they just change the name from "kamala" to something else ... And actually not misrepresent anything then I'm all up for it ... :)
How come a Khan is portrayed as a dark girl? Last time I checked they are whiter than white people, Pathetic Stereotypes #IGN #MARVEL
So the Malala legacy continues....
@BlackJack: Mr Black jack Aga khan is not of that race the word khan in his title is Just for Respect and Aga khan is Derived from Aqa Khan
@S: I don't think they will leave us.
Are they trying to show something about Malala... You know Malala -- Kamala sounds similar. Are they trying to say she is a shape shifter?
@ironMan!: racism at it peak
@ironMan!: and ofcourse she had to be a Khan! (Respect!) More real time heroes than any other clan – from Imran Khan to Shahrukh Khan, Chengis Khan to Agha Khan and many more. The most global and powerful clan maybe. Do you even know the meaning of the word clan? Chenghis Khan and Hulagu Khan can be thought of as the same clan, for example.
Nice. Looking forward to it.
Oh so Basically its Malala's story and Marvel wants to cash it.
Good idea but first you must obey the law and take care of Copy rights and ask Malala for permission.
and oh also give royalty to her. This belongs to her.
Good .... looking forward to it !
Definitely inspired by Malala :)
Kamala=Malala
funny! sounds like a hoax
Should be interesting...the brother sounds like a set character whose going to predictably end up being her future nemesis.
Can these people please leave us alone...

No wonder US came all the way to Asia fighting against these Khans in FATA, Pakistan
U.S.A's compensation for droning us. just great :)
