PESHAWAR: At least 256 suspects were arrested in a joint search operation conducted by the police and security forces in various areas of Yakatoot on Tuesday.

An official of the Yakatoot police station told The Express Tribune the operation was conducted after Monday night’s blast near a school in Khalid Town which left a child dead and six others injured.

The operation began at 4am and continued for nearly six hours. Army troops cordoned off the entire locale and police conducted a door-to-door search in Dir Colony, Rashid Garhi, Hazar Khwani and Zargarabad.

“The arrested suspects have been shifted to the police station and are being interrogated,” he said. The detainees will be released if they are cleared after investigation, added the official. “Police recovered six AK-47s, 16 other kinds of rifles, 10 pistols and 300 cartridges.” FIRs were registered against those who were arrested with arms and ammunition.

This is the second search operation in Yakatoot in the last two weeks. On October 24, around 200 suspects were arrested in an operation conducted in urban areas of the locality.

Similar operations have been conducted in Pishtakhara, Mathra, Paharipura, Faqirabad, Regi, Nasirbagh, Sarband, Mattani and Badhaber during the past 15 days – before the start of Muharram.

Peshawar ranks among the most sensitive districts during Muharram along with DI Khan, Hangu and Kohat, and strict security arrangements have been made this year to keep these areas safe.
