Old and inefficient: Minister for upgrading irrigation methods

Government has focused on agricultural growth by introducing farmer friendly policies, said Bosan.

ISLAMABAD: Minister for National Food Security and Research (NFS&R) Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan stressed the need to upgrade traditional and inefficient irrigation methods to increase the effectiveness and agricultural productivity of the country. He said that water is a critical input for agricultural productivity, economic development policies and environmental protection. Therefore the government has focused on agricultural growth by introducing farmer friendly policies and enhancing farm profitability. He spoke at the international workshop on “Watershed Rehabilitation and Irrigation Improvement in Pakistan” and added that the gap between the water demand and supply is increasing. Bosan stated that the availability of water in the wake of a growing population is becoming one of the biggest constraints for the country to meets its agricultural needs. He recognised the value of projects such as the watershed rehabilitation and irrigation improvement plan sponsored by the US.
