He said this in his first public speech since a US drone strike killed Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud, while speaking at Azm-e-Nau 4, one of the many military training exercises that are meant to introduce new war strategies.
The series aims at improving the mobilisation speed of troops and increasing cooperation for joint Army, Navy and Air Force response to any conventional threat. Security officials have deemed it a ‘new concept of war fighting’ aimed at preempting India’s ‘Cold Start Doctrine’.
Nawaz said that on his recent trip to Washington, he "made it clear that Pakistan does not intend to accept foreign aid."
"Gone are the days when our national security policies were determined by phone calls from abroad,” the prime minister added.
Nawaz warned peace could not be achieved "by unleashing senseless force". Though he did not mention the drone strike directly, he stressed his desire to "give peace a chance".
He also remarked that the Pakistani population is united “when it comes to the protection of our motherland.”
Praising the Pakistan army, he said that it has come to the aid of the civil government by “imparting training to our law enforcement agencies”.
He further stated that economic development is linked to the law and order situation of the country and that it is not something that will change overnight.
New technologies
The army allegedly shot down a drone during the exercise to demonstrate the development of anti-drone technology.
So during exercise s PAK ARMY has taken a Drone Down successfully.

@A-No.1: Well to shoot the drone, Pakistan army needs to put its assets on the ground where the drone strikes happen. That's exactly what the West is demanding- that the Pakistan Army go into North Waziristan. So instead of complaining to the rest of the world regarding the drone strikes, the shining Khans (Imran and Nisar) should simply ask the army to go into North Waziristan, and the drone strikes will stop. Just goes to show that neither of them are really interested in stopping the drone strikes, rather they are simply playing to the galleries.
@A-No.1: sorry my typo. i want to say SR-72 (not SR-71) see http://killerapps.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2013/11/01/thisstealthyhypersonicdronecouldbethemostinsaneplaneever_built
And suicide bombings are very productive for negotiations as more people TTP kills more it becomes important to start negotiations.
Hakeem Ullah Mehsood Killed in a Drone Attack
He said this in his first public speech since a US drone strike killed Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud, while speaking at Azm-e-Nau 4, one of the many military training exercises that are meant to introduce new war strategies.
Ohhh thank god , finally barey miyaan hit the bell n now he came to know that drones are counter-productive lol that's why i would say chotey miyan tou chotey miyan barey miyaan subhanala.
"Nawaz said that on his recent trip to Washington, he “made it clear that Pakistan does not intend to accept foreign aid.”" +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ NS must be high.................
Mian Sahib's statement is slap on the faces of those who surrendered Pakistan's dignity, honour and sovereignty to foreign masters. Thank Mian Sahib for showing real face of these cowards.
Nawaz Sharif is a worried man after Taliban has issued a warning to attack PMLN as it is following US policies. Read this news item published in Times of India.

PAF first needs to turn on its radar and keep an eye out for bogies originating from the Western borders. Then and only then the air force might react and scramble its air defense assets to shoot down a hostile target.
OBL raid clearly illustrated that our air defense capabilities which "Intentionally or unintentionally" did not either pick the Blackhawk assault helicopters. The drones have a very minuscule radar cross section which cannot be easily be detected by radars, especially the radars that PAF has. Even scouts posted along the anticipated flight paths of such drones will have a hard time picking them up by sound as they fly at high altitudes and their prop engines does not virtually emanate any noise.
People who are of the opinion that since both services of the armed forces now have the ability to shoot down drones and the executive/political authority should grow enough spine to order its forces to shoot them down - since when did the army need any explicit instructions from the government to safeguard its territorial sanctity and sovereignty? Did Ayub Khan order "Operation Gibraltar" in 1965 as President of Pakistan or Commander-in-Chief of the Army? Did Yahya Khan approve "Operation Searchlight" in East Pakistan as President or the Chief? Did Musharraf seek the approval of his political boss before embarking on the misadventure at Kargil?
Since the Army for long has taken it upon itself to be the true champion of the defense of our borders, it should immediately do the needful as far as drones are concerned.
@The Only Normal Person Here.:
You can never be wrong, @ TON.
Let us remember Drones are for kiling Taliba elements and nothing else. But as they say - In bush fire all the good and bad grass gets burnt, likewise in drone attacks also along with Taliban elements even civilians are killed. You cannot help it...then why is Pak army or any other force not doing the job of the US drones of killing the terrorists? Because of US drones at least more than 50% hard core terrorist are killed. Would Pak army have done that? Lets stop blaming US drones unnecessarily and appreciate them for doing a good job of eleminating Taliban terrorists which Pak establishment cannot do. In fact let Imran answer where is his 90 day peace formula with Taliban after election. Ask him to stay away from politics and find a job in Pak Cricket Board which will benefit much from his experience.
Shooting down drones???? ya like in your dreams...
Its Bahawalpur not Islamabad
Pakistan should be very vigilant in protecting its borders around 24 hours and its airforce planes should be red alert all the time and it should down any object including drones as soon as enemy plane enters in its borders. Pakistan has every right to defend it borders as a sovereign state.Pakistan cannot afford any laziness in this regard and must not trust any other country particularly USA, India and Israel. Pakistan should keep its missiles and nucleat arsenal ready all the time in view of tense relations with certain powers and should not hesitate to use its armaments as and when required in its best interests. Pakistan should be vigilant 24 hours to defend its borders. All the nation is behind our armed forces.
OH Yeah, we don't. Coz we do what they they want, without any demand.
@Abdul Rauf: You are so wrong. SR71 is not a drone and neither does it fly at Mach 6. It has also been retired.
The Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft.
Nawaz said that on his recent trip to Washington, he “made it clear that Pakistan does not intend to accept foreign aid.” . Yep - no foreign aid - but American aid is OK - British aid is OK - Saudi aid is OK - World Bank and IMF aid OK - just no foreign aid. . And you wonder why Pakistan has no credibility?
Nawaz Sharif has outsourced his foreign and interior policy to the terrorists.
what if kSA started drone strikes in pakistan to eliminate all liberals? Will these parties react in the same way as it will be a breach of pak's soverginity?
In reality pakistan is under hostage of taliban.
Shoot them down - PAK army...
The army has publically demonstrated the capability of downing drones, OK. The PAF also has that capability. Now if the prime minister does not order the drone to be shot down one can safely infer that either he is a coward or he is protecting his assets abroad which can easily be seized on US instruction.
Mian Nawaz Sharif, beg to differ - drone attacks are NOT counterproductive - they should be allowed free reign to get all TTP leaders.. see how soon they would once they begin to lose their might, turn to mice...
Best defense against India's cold start program is to not attack India.
Technically speakingi don't think we have the capability to shoot a drone. We can only shoot old drones, not the new ones like SR-71, which can fly at 6 mach (2041.74 meter per second). So this ineffective anti drone technology needs to be improve
I was watching these exercises live on PTV and shooting the drone took alot of time. Their were 4 tanks (drone shooters-basically a tank with a radar and anti aircraft guns) on east side, 4 on west and they all continuously fired on the drone. The announcement was made that these tanks can shoot the target from a distance of 20 kms only. Nawaz Sharif started laughing when this new technology missed the target first three times and the Lt. generals sitting behind him too.
As usual hypocrisy at its best.
We are proud of our army which present "unity"in its all actions, demonstrate "faith"by sincerely discharging assigned duties and "discipline" by performing all challenging tasks under able leadership in all weathers and extreme temperature.
nawaz's opinion that drones are counter productive is respected but in the case of the terrorist killed, who was responsible for countless cold blooded murders, he would no doubt agree it was productive- as this scum who was living a stone throw from the army base (perhaps under their protection? just like OBL) and yet nawaz your impotent law and order agencies could not apprehend him for reasons best known to pakistan government! You either havent got the ability, will or for other reasons, there is no law and order internally or externally, so let the others do the job and you go on talking and not walking. As to not taking instructions on the phone call, pull the other one!
what I see is the land is missing so many trees. About Drones... Drones are only coming because incompetent actions of security forces.. if they can eradicate Taliban, no drone will come to Pakistan. We must say Thank you USA for taking out a mass murder.
The fact is that Pakistan Army (through Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif) express Pakistan's sympathy and condolence on the death of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief and world's top terrorist Hakimullah Mehsud in a US drone attack on last Friday.
It seems a well calculated move of Pakistan Army -- fearful of the consequence of drone attack.
Pakistan Army has become a hostage of its own created Frankenstein.
"Says Pakistan no longer determines national security policies based on phone calls from abroad." +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ We have progressed...now the drones shape our domestic and foreign policies.
Yeah right, you have been saying this before election mian saab. Time for an action now, what did Obama whisper in your ear, let me guess "Drones will NOT STOP" The way our Govt is dealing with terrorist is absolutely awful.
"Gone are the days when our national security policies were determined by phone calls from abroad"
So True
Now they make it on mobile phone
“Gone are the days when our national security policies were determined by phone calls from abroad,” the prime minister added.
I guess we now have local call rates for Saudi Arabia :)
"Drone attacks are counterproductive". Than why these are happening in Pakistan?
They certainly were for Hakimullah Masood...
