Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition seeking a ban on strikes by lawyers, observing that action was being taken against lawyers who disrupted judicial work.
The petitioner Advocate Rana Shahid, had argued that lawyers went on strike regularly, holding up cases and burdening litigants who were seeking justice. Striking lawyers also often misbehaved with judges, pressuring them to stop work.
He asked the court to direct bar associations not to go on strike.
Justice Bandial observed that incidents of misbehaviour with judges and locking up of courtrooms would not be tolerated.
He said that references had been forwarded to bar associations against lawyers involved in such incidents and there licences would be suspended.
He then dismissed the petition.
