HYDERABAD:

The district administration of Hyderabad will launch a three-day short interval additional dose (Siad) polio eradication campaign from October 28 to root out the crippling disease from the district.

Under the programme, 752 mobile vaccination teams will be mobilised to carry out door-to-door campaign and administer drops to 297,844 children under the age of five in the 53 union councils and the Hyderabad Cantonment Board, said the district’s focal person for the polio campaign, Dr Syed Masood Jafri, on Wednesday. He added that out of the 46 polio cases detected in Pakistan so far this year, three were reported in Sindh.

Most of the polio cases were reported from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Frontier Regions, where 34 children were affected by the virus, he said, adding that seven cases were reported from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and two cases were reported from Punjab so far during the current year.

Dr Jafri said that the district administration has decided to launch the Siad campaign along with the national polio eradication campaign. The drive aims to administer drops to children in 94 health facilities where fixed vaccination centres are already functioning.
