Many complainants say division deprives them of favoured candidate.

LAHORE:

The district coordination officer heard complaints and suggestions regarding the new delimitation of the metropolis from citizens of City tehsil on Tuesday. A city government official told The Express Tribune that some of their concerns were genuine while others seemed politically motivated.

The city government had received the most number of complaints (94) from City tehsil. Similar complaints were clubbed together to bring the number down to 59. The delimitation officer is required to submit a report on all suggestions and objections by Wednesday (today).

City government officials said there was a common misgiving regarding voter lists. Some people were concerned that their votes would have to be cast in other UCs.

Complaints filed by complainants who did not provide their names and addresses might not be considered. No other complaints will be disregarded. A decision on each will be taken by the delimitation authority by November 2. The final lists will be published on November 3 and a notification issued by November 4.

On average, each union council has a population of 21,000.

A city government official said that while complainants were not required to disclose their political affiliation, many complaints appeared to be politically motivated. Several complainants were concerned that their favoured candidates would be running from other union councils.

Some complainants, he said, were genuine. Citizens of union councils on either side of Ferozepur Road complained that they would have to travel more than two kilometres to visit the UC office because of the Metro Bus track. Such complaints were also received from citizens of union councils near the Ring Road and Canal Road.

Local Government Additional Director Syed Anjum Shakeel Gillani said, “It is not for us to decide which complaints were genuine or politically motivated.” Regarding the misconception about old voter lists, he said that the election commission would draw up new voter lists based on the new delimitation.
