Would she still have been killed, had she not displayed that courage immediately after the blast? The answer is yes, ‘they’ would have killed her nonetheless. Yet, she had honour and a sense of loyalty and responsibility to the people. Why do we go to funerals? Why do we condole with people? The dead are gone; condolences and show of support don’t bring people back. Yet, we do it, to show that we care, to do what we can. Shaheed BB was doing just that and more, also telling them that those dead have not died in vain; that they were martyrs and she stood by them fearlessly and ready to embrace the same fate.
A few years on, Mian Iftikhar Hussain’s only son was martyred. Just hours later, Mian Iftikhar Hussain talked to the press and recalling that scene is still chilling. Those of us who have lost loved ones to violence and brutality know what it feels like. Even standard and limited capacity for human empathy will tell you that much. Mian Iftikhar Hussain’s clear-eyed, steady voiced resolve to continue fighting is the stuff heroes are made of.
Shaheeds BB and Bashir Bilour are gone, Mian Iftikhar Hussain has lost. One missed them, when Mr Israrullah Gandapur was martyred. Martyrdom without ownership, without acknowledgement is what bruises the spirit. The dithering response by his own party, by his own government insults his martyrdom. Vague condemnation, as he if was killed in an accident, or perhaps, some nauseous view that it was a justifiable retaliation of some sort. Those who were taught not to respect martyrs of others have learnt to disrespect their own. They, perhaps, miss the point; that all martyrs are ‘ours’. The cruel ignorance that those from other parties were somehow killed because of their ‘corruption’ and ‘inefficiency’ was their excuse in the past. Now the K-P government has ‘requested’ the TTP to stop. Mr Imran Khan does not deem it worth his time or energy to attend the funerals of his party members. The ‘corrupt’ ANP is now gone, their policies no longer in force, yet killings have not ceased. The only change is that the dead are not honoured anymore.
‘Honour’ and ‘martyrdom’ are not hollow superlatives, particularly in times of conflict. They are concrete and tangible values and incentive structures in battles. Nothing else explains soldiers of our army and police forces willing to sacrifice their lives. Yet, their funerals are now attended only by members of the forces themselves, members of the federal and K-P government, of course, are busy doing stellar jobs of fixing the economy and governance, etc. The K-P chief minister (CM) as we should remember, and perhaps continue to make him remember, ‘does not know of the Taliban’. Who is the K-P government making a ‘request’ to then? Has the CM no respect for our soldiers dying daily? Was General Niazi martyred in an ‘understandable’ response to drones? To dumb down ideological and structural problems, abuse all others and give 90-day deadlines to solve everything might have worked as a campaign strategy. Denial, abuse and apology are no cornerstones for running a government.
The people have given Mian Sahib and Mr Khan a mandate, and with the All Parties Conference’s (APC) token validation, they need to get on with it. If you want to ‘talk’, then go ahead and talk; in God’s name, end the limbo. If we are destined to suffer another round of failed talks, let’s have them as soon as possible, while there still may be time. The cost of indecision is not only the lives of our civilians and soldiers, but also an erosion of the State. A few years earlier, Mian Shahbaz Sharif ‘requested’ the Taliban to ‘spare’ Punjab; now the K-P CM is asking for compassion from those whom he also believes do not exist. On the question of the State, there are numerous things that General Musharraf can and should be tried and held accountable for — Lal Masjid is not one of them. Unfortunate as the incident was, to describe that as murder entails that the officers and soldiers killed while trying to contain baton-wielding women and gun-wielding men vowing to take over the capital were, in fact, the ‘aggressors’.
While Mr Khan rightly deserves criticism of his politics and world view, there remains a curious reluctance surrounding Mian Sahib. The primary reason is that the now ‘matured’ Mian Sahib understands that laying low is a great survival strategy. Mian Sahib has almost the same policy towards terrorism as Mr Khan. He just has learnt to say very little on the matter or most other matters. Mian Sahib’s present guiding principle is an ancient one, if one does nothing, one does nothing wrong. He waits for Mr Khan and his supporters to say something that will deflect all criticism onto themselves, and they continue to oblige. This, Mr Prime Minister, is not how you run a country.
Even after responsibility is claimed, condemnation takes no names, the FIRs are against ‘unknown people’, the funerals deserted. This state of affairs, by its nature, cannot last for very long. It will go one way or the other. The balance right now is tipped towards the wrong side. Appeasement and denial will not secure the federal or the K-P government in the Emirate. Mian Sahib and Mr Khan, act now, there might not be time to regret later. You owe it to the people of this country, to Shaheed Israrullah Gandapur, to the martyrs of Karsaz and all other attacks. You sirs, owe it to Shaheed BB and Mian Iftikhar Hussain.

@A reader:
i think Kashmiri Punits are straight crooks living off the work of proleeriats. Mr Nehru was one of them, the bougeoisie!!
Rex Minor
PS sorry for spelling errors.
@Not Hypocrite: In General We want TTP to do nothing when Drones attack with the consent of Army and Civilian Govt, their people. No we want TTP to attack more and more and more and kill as many civilians as possible to avenge drone attacks bcoz by doing so the hurt US interests the most,,,,
Martyrdom without ownership, without acknowledgement is what bruises the spirit. The dithering response by his own party, by his own government insults his martyrdom. The only change is that the dead are not honoured anymore.
Worth reading.
Pakistan is on the DI list who is dying from massive heart failure. The heart ie military has gone weak since the arteries ie top brass have been self blocked by them and reasons for the same are only known to them, would result in complete heart failure and ultimate demise. RIP
sorry to say but CM KPK did attended the funeral of Gandapur and imran khan went to DI Khan and meant gandapur family
As usual fantastic article! I still have faith in PML(N) as compared to IK & PPP. Sadly IK is living on a very different planet.
@Alami Musafir:
Unless we realise WHY the US so dictated, and stop this madness, the US masterplan for civil war in Pakistan will be accomplished, at our cost.
OK.
Go ahead. Tell us, the lesser mortals, 'WHY the US so dictated'.
Or let me guess,
A. US Wants to capture the Oil Fields of Pakistan.
B. US wants to capture the warm water ports, the same as the USSR. They plan to airlift all their exports to Afghanistan, then take the road to Gwadar, from where the shipping will be done.
C. US wants to steal all the electricity or may be all the water, in connivance with the Indians.
D. US wants to facilitate Eid-ul-Azha sacrifice by Ahmadis.
Tell me, Sir, WHY?
@Alami Musafir: Mr Ijaz, perhaps you are missing the wood for the trees, the tapestry for the small patch thereof about which you are so concerned. The great Seymour Hersh has just written a book on the FALSITY of the capture of Bin Laden by US forces in Abbotabad:
From the Guardian where the interview was published:
This article was amended on 1 October 2013. The original text stated that Hersh sold a story about the My Lai massacre to the New York Times for $5,000 when in fact it was the Times of London. Hersh has pointed out that he was in no way suggesting that Osama bin Laden was not killed in Pakistan, as reported, upon the president's authority: he was saying that it was in the aftermath that the lying began. Finally, the interview took place in the month of July, 2013.
I dont like you Saroop Ijaz, but most of what you have said is right. Thanks. Maybe if Commentators like you and Kamran Shafi can stop taking potshots at Imran Khan and for a change criticize the center as well, and be objective in their analysis it would be great!!
IK is stubborn as ever, wants to run the country/KPK as he managed the cricket team. This isn't a game and his unserstanding of Pashtuns, tribal areas, war on terror and the motives of TTP are seriously flawed. These days, he speaks like one of TTP's spokesman.
While you have a right to like any one including Benzair Bhutto, however, in the context of subject you must also remember to credit Benzair and her Father Z A Bhutto for introducing extreemism. It was Z A Bhutto who introduced extreemism againts one Jama'at into constitution thus handing the clergy a blank cheque which they later cashed in against each other. Bhutto didn't achive what he wanted for but the country paid the cost for his bwoing to extreemist elements, later it was Benazir who encouraged Taliban to take control of Kabul and was first to recognize their government.
Now if your own snake bite you you can't blame others!
mr ijaz i have been praising your views since i read them first time, back many months,,but this time i want to suggest to you ,to please try to be creative and positive plus ,please write solutions for the problem and stop critisim,,,,bcz we know very well the dangers of extremism and its consequenses ,but fighting it with bullets in denselly pop[ulated areas ,where enemies are hidden in general population, is not a mature way of solving it ,we must bring the other side infront and make them argue their case ,and thus find someground to negotiate and solve it ,,,,,by this way the true anti sate[indian and western ]followers will be isolated and it will be easy to identify them and crush them with full force and thus bring peace tp kpk in special and country in general,,,,
Many many articles of mr saroop Aijaz are bold and balanced. However, one often feels he is very soft on PPP and avoids blunders done by PPP and it's leaders. This disturbs the balance which one has in the minds of readers.
One expects an excellent writer to balance out his articles by writing about all political parties and highlight their weaknesses and mistakes / blunders, which are abundant everywhere.
@Nadir:
""All will be okay when TTP opens its offices and the federal government meets its demands.""
And what are TTP's demands ???
@Alami Musafir: For you,and others who call the armed forces that had been protecting you,and dying in the service of the country,foolish soldiers and ineffective and in the wrong,to believe in Mr.Hersch ,and disbelieve hundreds of books and proofs to the contrary is not surprising.People for whom,TTP and other murderous outfits are the heroes,BB and other martyrs who are killed for facing up to the perverted is but a footnote. TTP apologists and supporters even deny those murders and bombings that TTP itself has admitted to and gloated about. They legitimize the murder of 50,000 Pakistanis by these perverts, with sundry conspiracy theories. For them TTP has the right to kill innocent Pakistanis as if they have anything to do with drones and the war.They believe in the perverted logic of TTP that they will kill innocent Pakistanis,their own co-citizens,for something the enemy is doing to them.
Imran Khan Should understand that our Army is Fighting against Taliban for a Progressive and Educated Pakistan Imran Khan is confused person and also confusing/misleading the youngsters of our country for the sake of his own politics. He is defending the Terrorist/murderers by giving funny logic's like: Drone Attacks Reaction etc Dorn attacks start in 2005-06 and Taliban are killing people before that Whats the logic for it Mr. Taliban Khan?
There are many segments/parties in Pakistan, who thinks the constitution of Pakistan is not Islamic but they not picked up the Arms. They are peacefully struggling for the Change because this is the only way forward. Taliban don’t accept our constitution, they make a state within a state. Taliban picked up arms against our Army and also have intensions to extend their state area from Waziristan to Islamabad. They want to enforce their ideology on the basis of their power. Waziristan is a part of our country but Taliban Rules over it. In Waziristan, their is Parliament (Shoora) of Taliban, They also have their police, their Judicial system. People of Waziristan can’t talk against them because they are afraid. Mr. IK should we give an area of our state to Taliban? Should we leave the people of Waziristan in the hands of those brutals? Taliban are the Agents of America and working to divide Pakistan, should we leave them to do what they want? Taliban attacked GHQ and shown their strength. Now World is frightened that Taliban militants can take our Nuclear Assets, Taliban/militants are paving the way for the world attack on Pakistan because our Nuclear Assets are not save. Isn’t an alarming situation for us. Our Army well understand the whole situation and saved the Pakistan by clearing Swat and other agencies and restricting Taliban to Waziristan only. Now Army just needs to clear their main area with the support of our nation. Army has the capability to clear Waziristan they just need our moral support. IK's attitude demoralizing our Armed forces who are fighting against Taliban.We have lost precious 40-45 thousand persons of our nation including 8000 security forces personals.
Great write up as usual. Always spoiled though when you drag in the Shaheed BB. I am absolutely flabbergasted that a learned person like you doesn't realise how that Shaheed Family used and abused this poor country towards their own personal needs and greed. Their only claim towards martyrdom was their unending lust for power, paisa and prestige. In most people's minds, that is most certainly not a definition of Shahadat.
In General We want TTP to do nothing when Drones attack with the consent of Army and Civilian Govt, their people.
IK knows very well thay this attack on his minister was not carried out by TTP but by those who want to break him and end Talks.
@Alami Musafir: You have taken the argument too far from the context, somehow reflecting the apologists' typical approach "this is not our war". while the author has hit the nail on its head, you guys seem to confuse the nation thru your vague conspiracies theories.
More power to your pen Sir. Such a concise write up. Indeed denial will drown these so called two leaders of Punjab.
@Alami Musafir: Wow, too bad the link you provided doesn't work! BTW, Seymour Hersch is notably promoting his book that he wants to Sell, but I don't believe anyone has had a chance to read or review the book yet! Please wait before jumping to conclusions.
For some odd reason you seem to be impressed by the late BB to a degree that seems odd, especially for one who is as well read as you. There is no denying certain sterling personal qualities and her intellect but I would not venture further that that. On Nawaz Sharif playing his cards close to his chest........ if anything is a change. What we should look at are results and judge accordingly.
Excellent piece Saroop!
Does anyone recall Riaz Basra of the L-e-J? If not then just simply Google and you'll discover that not only did Basra attempt to assassinate Nawaz Sharif but he managed through fear to coerce the then Punjab Chief Minister into easing the police pressure against him. Right now Nawaz Sharif is not facing just facing a single terrorist leader but dozens of them in the TTP. His silence on the TTP issue is probably a simple sign of naked fear.
there is no limit to imran khan's populist politics.
"Shaheed BB"? - have we not been using the word shaheed quite a lot. While every time your ire is directed towards right wing politicians, have you ever done so to our Army, which in fact directs our national security policy, and have lost several generals, and still not shown much of a response, or at PPP which was in control of FATA (comes under federal rule) between 2008-2013, but nothing much was done in terms of a concrete policy against the militants.
I would give few more months to Mian Sahib. He is taking positive steps for economy, therefore we should wait the outcome but Imran is not even fit to be an opposition leader.
While Benazir Bhutto may have been a victim of political or militant terrorism, she was part and parcel of increasing infiltration of Punjabi Muslims into Kashmir, which resulted in dispersion of Kashmiri Pandits and Secular Kashmiri Muslims into interior India. It was under her administration, as disclosed by B. Raman (former counterintelligence chief of R&AW), that the Kashmir situation deteriorated. Thus, she had blood on her hands, as did her father. It is surprising why an otherwise cogent and assertive Mr. Saroop Ijaz seems to have a strange affection for Benazir Bhutto which seems to cloud his better judgement.
I encourage Mr. Ijaz to watch the following video made by Mr. Ashok Pandit. It contains a clip of Benazir Bhutto. I wonder what a Kashmir Pandit's reaction to her speech would be. Kashmiri Pandits have been part of Kashmir thousands of years before Islam even came into being.

All will be okay when TTP opens its offices and the federal government meets its demands.
