Mental health: ‘Depression the leading cause of suicide all over the world’

An awareness walk was held here on Thursday in connection with World Mental Health Day.


The walk was organised by the Punjab Institute of Mental Health (PIMH).

The participants walked from the PIMH offices to Jilani Park. The walk was led by Excise and Taxation Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman, Health Minister Tahir Khalil Sindhu, Advisor to Chief Minister on Health Khwaja Salman Rafique and Punjab Ombudsman Javed Mehmood.

Some patients too took part in the walk.

Later, addressing a seminar, Rehman said, “People suffering from mental illness should never be left alone. This creates a sense of deprivation among them which aggravates their condition.” “Depression is the main cause of suicide all over the world,” he said. Sindhu said walk was an attempt to draw attention to the problems faced by the mentally ill.



Addressing a seminar held in connection with the World Mental Health Day, Anti-Drugs Narcotics Campaign Consultant Syed Zulfiqar Hussain said it was important that people did not abandon their loved ones on account of minor mental problems.

He said mentally ill people should be treated with love and affection.
