The Lahore High Court on Monday reserved judgment on the application of former minister Ghulam Sarwar seeking bail in a fake degree case.
The court reserved the judgment after hearing arguments of the applicant and the prosecutor general.
Sarwar is charged with obtaining a university degree using a fake intermediate certificate. Prosecutor General Sadaqat Ali told the court that an FIR had been registered against Sarwar on the direction of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
He said the police had completed its investigation.
Ali said Sarwar had failed the practical exam for a diploma but had obtained a no objection certificate from the Punjab Board of Technical Education (PBTE).
He said Sarwar had attached the same certificate to a form for his BA admission.
Sarwar’s counsel Advocate Salman Akram Raja said the PBTE did not have the authority to cancel a diploma.
He said his client had been elected twice on the basis of his certificate.
He said Sarwar was being implicated in a false case.
The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) had filed a case against Sarwar for obtaining a fake diploma to appear in his BA exam.
The ACE had reported that Sarwar had obtained a duplicate diploma that had actually been issued to another candidate of the same name. Their fathers’ names were, however, different.
The ACE has filed a case against Sarwar, the former chairman of the PBTE, its board secretary and two other officials for issuing the duplicate diploma.
