
If breast cancer is diagnosed on time, 90% of the deaths can be prevented, said resource person of Pink Ribbon, Dr Shahzad, on Thursday.
Dr Shahzad was speaking at a seminar on prevention and treatment of breast cancer held at Sheikh Taimur Academic Block of University of Peshawar. The symposium was organised by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan in collaboration with Pink Ribbon.
Dr Shahzad informed around 40,000 women fall prey to breast cancer every year. Most of them succumb to the ailment due to lack of knowledge and awareness, he added.
Dr Shahzad further said Pakistan has one of the highest rates of breast cancer in Asia where every ninth woman is at risk of developing the fatal disease. He added every woman above 40 should go for annual check-ups. Key speaker at the seminar, Professor Dr Umme Salma also stressed on the need for awareness and education for the prevention of breast cancer.
