Pharma industry: PPMA sets $1b export target by 2015

Chairman PPMA, Jawed Akhai informed that the local pharmaceutical industry had been facing issues.

ISLAMABAD: PPMA urged the government on Thursday to provide them with a level playing field in fulfilling the requirements of local drug manufacturers and meet the export target of $1 billion by end of fiscal year 2015-16 against the current export of $200 million. Chairman PPMA, Jawed Akhai informed that the local pharmaceutical industry had been facing the issues and challenges including sales tax on pharmaceutical industry, pricing of medicines and dysfunctional Drug Regulatory Authority Pakistan (DRAP) has pushed the local pharmaceutical industry to the wall. He said that manufacturing of about 40 essential drugs had been stopped due to rupee devaluation, inflation and escalated expenses.
