RAWALPINDI:

A 20-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by five national volunteers deputed with the police in Gujar Khan.

The police, after filing a rape case, have arrested five national volunteers identified as Ajmal, Khursheed, Umair, Majid and Naseer. Protests by enraged residents rocked neighbourhoods with people demanding the death penalty for the rapists.

A police official said five volunteers abducted the Naheed* when she went to a market and took her to a rented room and raped her.

“The rapists dumped the girl at a deserted place while she was unconscious,” he said, adding that the girl informed her family when she came to her senses. The father of the girl lodged a complaint with the police which immediately raided the place and arrested the suspects.

Later, the girl was taken to a hospital for a medical-legal examination. Locals staged a protest outside the hospital as well as the police station and blocked the road, demanding the police hand over the rapists to them. The police said cases have been registered against the alleged rapists and further interrogation is underway.

Robber killed

During a confrontation with the police on Saturday, a robber was killed, while another injured in the jurisdiction of Airport police station.

Out of a gang of four, three robbers, including the injured, managed to escape with cash and gold from a house. Talking to The Express Tribune, Civil Lines Circle ASP Malik Jamil Zafar said the gang stormed a two-storey house in Airport Housing Society owned by Naveed Khan and locked his family in a room in the morning.

“The robbers did not know that there was a woman present on the first floor, who alerted her brother and the police was called in,” he said.

“When they realised the police had surrounded the house, the robbers started firing at them. As the police returned fire, a robber was killed while another sustained bullet injuries.”

The police took the body into custody and shifted it to District Headquarters Hospital for postmortem, the ASP added. They also recovered a dagger and two pistols.

Although, ASP Zafar denied that the robbers had made away with cash and gold, Gulzar-e-Quaid check-post in-charge, Sub Inspector Abdul Latif contradicted the statement, saying the robbers did take away Rs125,000 and gold ornaments worth over a million. An FIR has yet to be registered.

Man stabbed to death

A labourer was allegedly killed by his roommate over a minor dispute in Bahria Town on Friday. According to preliminary investigations, arguments over tasteless food spiralled and resulted in the murder of Nisar Khan from Bajaur Agency.

Khan and Waheed Gul, also from the same region, were residing in a single room in Phase-VIII for the last few years.

On Friday, the victim criticised Gul’s cooking which enraged him and he attacked Khan with a knife and fled. Nisar was taken to DHQ Hospital where he died. His body was dispatched to his native town. The Rawat police on Saturday registered a case against Gul and are looking for him.
