And other such: cyclists without lights or reflectors and pedestrians, dressed in dark clothes, riding or walking, quite nonchalantly, on the wrong side of the road, in the face of oncoming traffic, absolutely unmindful of the fact that they could well be run over; women balancing a load on their heads, carrying a baby and holding another two children by the hand, one a mere toddler, crossing Lahore’s high speed Ring Road just a 100 feet away from an overhead pedestrian bridge. And so on and so forth.
Like, say, going overboard in showing our eagerness to talk with avowed, dangerous, ruthless and murderous enemies of our state; our lay people; our soldiery, indeed the enemies of everything, including our Constitution. An enemy cold-hearted enough to blow up mosques during prayers; invade army cantonments and identify and kill senior officers and their children; blow up buses carrying our soldiers to work; mercilessly decapitate our soldiers and policemen and Levies and Khasadars; kill Muslims of other sects; and in the latest, possibly the most shameless assault: on completely innocent people: the poorest of the poor, the weakest of the weak: our Christian brothers and sisters and children.
Are we not behaving exactly as described above? Are we not walking right into the path of an oncoming and heavy trailer truck? But, even though describing ourselves as ‘unique’ might bring a smile, isn’t ‘masochist’ the word I want in describing us and our behaviour, in this particular matter? Now, before anyone yells blue murder, I only refer to these two meanings of the word masochism: 1) ‘The deriving of pleasure, or the tendency to derive pleasure, from being humiliated or mistreated, either by another or by oneself, and 2) A willingness or tendency to subject oneself to unpleasant or trying experiences.
Consider: we are now being lectured by none other than the Great White Hope, Imran Khan, that the TTP (and affiliates) be given ‘an office’ ensconced in which they will then talk to the government. The reason he advances is that if the Americans can allow the Taliban to have an office in Qatar, why can’t we let the TTP have one in Pakistan?
Array, Khan Sahib, the Afghan Taliban are resisting the American occupation of Afghanistan, and as my friend Amir Mateen said in The News just today, are NOT wantonly killing their own innocents, i.e., bombing women’s Meena Bazaars! The Americans, on the other hand, want to talk to the Taliban because they want to leave Afghanistan in an orderly fashion, facilitating the transport of their expensive and state-of-the-art heavy equipment and material. How does the TTP, which avowedly wants to take over the state of Pakistan through whatever means, compare in any way with the Afghan Taliban?
Your party, Imran Khan, deliberately reads history untruthfully and dissembles disgracefully: you simply do not accept, and I repeat myself and others, that the takeover of K-P and then Fata started way back in 1994 by spreading terror among the populace of Swat, then Malakand, then Dir and Bajaur and then other areas of Fata. One has to repeat this for the benefit of the very young who support you and who simply do not READ enough to know enough.
But, who is to argue with you, O’ Great Khan? So, since what you say is always right, let’s just go down the ‘Give the TTP an office way’ and see where we get. Apart from the fact that they are a proscribed entity, banned by law, will they have renounced violence by then? Why, only this last Tuesday (and just a few hours before your brilliant suggestion) they attacked and destroyed part of the under-construction Gandao Dam in Mohmand, killing three poor workers and kidnapping two others. They also set fire to heavy equipment such as bulldozers and trucks and tractors!
So, when will they stop their murder and mayhem? Remember, that just two days after the government announced ‘talks’ (mostly dragooned into it by your continued demands), and one day after your government in K-P unilaterally and quite stupidly announced the army’s withdrawal from Swat, they had the temerity to assassinate the Swat Divisional Commander and seven other soldiers across Fata?
But back to the ‘office’. Pray, where will this office be? If the area was not so inaccessible, I should have suggested a custom-built building at the site where Major General Sanaullah Niazi was martyred, a befitting tribute to a brave soldier to have his murderers sit and talk ‘peace’ where they killed him. But that’s a no go. This ‘office’ will have to be in Peshawar or Islamabad. In Peshawar, might I suggest a building very near where these murderers blew up the brave IG of the Frontier Constabulary, young Safwat Ghayur? Reasons same as stated before. In Islamabad, the very first site that comes to mind is your own estate, Imran Khan, up in the hills of Banigala Park! I have already suggested to the government to make you the pointsman in these ‘talks’, which you have championed so long and so hard.
As to staff cars, I do not think the TTP is wanting for fancy Land Cruisers considering how all the stolen vehicles from across the country and even abroad, land up in Fata, but there is the question of flags. (Remember the flag fiasco in Qatar, which we certainly don’t want). So, let them fly TTP’s flag (higher) on the right hand side and poor old Pakistan’s (lower) on the left. Pennants of ETIP and al Shebab can fly under the TTP flag. Good luck to you, Pointsman! And God save Pakistan and us masochists.

Sir, Thank you for using the words "avowedly", " nonchalantly", and ‘masochist’ and especially for providing the meanings for the latter word.Great to learn proper english under you.
Your imagery created in your first two paragraphs makes us feel as if we are right there witnessing the sight and experiencing the scene ourselves.
I could really see the scene with my mind's eye.
Thank you teacher , and thank you tribune.
@Sexton Blake: Time for conspiracy theories is gone. Less and less Pakistanis are ready to be taken in by apologists for murderers of ordinary Pakistanis.Off course, people who can't even believe that OBL has been killed in Abbottabad ,will keep on ranting hoarse in justifying the daily mayhem of their neighbors and co-citizens by terrorists.
I was not sure where Mr Shafi was headed based on his first paragraph...his opening was crafted quite well. I had to read the entire article twice since I do believe that at the end we may all discover that Mr Imran Khan is the "The world’s worst masochist, ever"...my apologies in case I sound too optimistic (or cynical) at this point...wonderful piece Mr Shafi...more power to you.
@Ali S: Dear Ali, Just try to stop the US from hoisting the American flag, and see what happens.
You do realize that thanks to Nawaz's brilliance. The TTP owns Lahore and northern Punjab. The day an operation is launched against the TTP, Lahore will be in Karachi's atmosphere.
@hira: Just to be clear so that I can understand. Who are you talking about?
If I was army chief, I would launch a full fledge war on them today and let the war continue until one side wins.
The only solution is making the public realise that Taliban do not follow Islam, but a separate cult which gets its inspiration from wahabi kingdoms. Once this realization dawns, people will distance themselves from TTP.
@Fawad "After World war 1 and 2, millions died and for sure many were women and children. Even then they sat together for negotiations."
Both times allied first won on the battle filed before starting any negotiations with the losers (Germany, Japan, etc.). Please don’t try to mislead the younger generation. IK is already doing a good job of that.
Kamran Sahib, you are a learned man. You should study how Maharajah Ranjit Singh dealt with the hordes from the northwest. These barbarians know the language of force. Hit them hard, and they will cower and melt away.
Give them an inch, and they will take a mile. Ranjit Singh understood this, and pursued them relentlessly beyond the Indus.
That is the strategy we must apply, for history is repeating itself.
@Raj - USA: you would love any one who criticize each and everything pakistani....i am not surprised.
Taliban are greedy - greed is their defining feature. The religion is a masquerade, an eyewash. If they get into power, you will see one set of rules for themselves, and another set of rules for the common populace.
Dear kamran sb, We all know that it is been going on since a long time please give us solution we have been doing militarily action for almost 10 years now it is done nothing you like other are also pointing fingers need a solution right now talks are the only solution
All the the inputs are either criticizing IK or indicating a predilection for nil negotiation, but I am still waiting for someone, from the top down, to present a workable solution for what is basically a looming civil war with powerful entities on both sides. On one side their is a huge Government army, and on the other a huge group of insurgents who have kept US/NATO forces at bay for 13 years. Best of luck Pakistan. I can only see losers coming up at the moment..
Question: What is the easiest thing to do in the time of crisis? Answer: By writing or speaking criticizing the one who gives a way to resolve issues. Question: What is even easier than criticizing by writing and speaking? Answer: Shaking your head in a TV show when the one who gives some solution is speaking Question: What is that person called; who does the above two things. Answer: The most honest, sincere, patriotic and intellectual person. Question: What should that person avoid? Answer: Giving any practical solution with example from past. Question: What should that person ignore? Answer: Ground reality and past experience.
So do people think that the TTP having an office will increase their violence?!
His logic that we should have an office for TTP because the Americans gave the Afghan Taliban an office in Qatar is ridiculous. Does he not know that the Doha office was closed down after the Taliban flouted the strict preconditions set by Karzai's government and the Americans (that their official flag which was used during their rule in the 1990s will not be raised at the office). This is how 'talks' are done - you refuse to stick to even one little precondition (really, hoisting of your official flag isn't that big a deal) and away goes your plush office.
On the other hand, here in Pakistan they can massacre scores of your own soldiers and civilians without impunity and openly demand a hostile takeover of your own land's law, and you bend your backside over for them. IK should be ashamed of himself - does he really think the Pakistani public is this stupid?
Voting for PTI in the May elections is one of the worst decisions of my life.
@fawad "After World war 1 and 2, millions died and for sure many were women and children. Even then they sat together for negotiations. Now imagine if they had started blaming each other for being animals for killing innocent people, they would have continued fighting and killed even more millions. "
World War 1 and World War 2 only ended after one side had taken a severe beating and agreed to surrender. Then talks were carried out on how to move forward.
Has the Taliban taken a severe beating and agreed to surrender? No. They are not even laying down their arms. So why are we negotiating?
It seems as if we have surrendered.
@fawad: What a stupid analogy
Saw last nights talk show ,speaking good English does not translate in being impolite to those who dont speak it.How can one give peace a chance in your article.
We Pakistanis are indeed strange. The people who call for Talks and negotiations are considered extremist supporters while the people who want military operations are considered moderate.
@Arif: The price will be the dismantling of the government and the application of wahhabi style sharia as interpreted by the Taliban, with all its draconean restrictions, not to mention eternal violent jihad against India, America, and all other infidels nations. So two questions: 1) is this the "price" you are willing to pay for peace; and 2) how "peaceful" do you think Pakistan will be as the TTP continue their holy war against both inside and outside of Pakistan, now armed with nukes and more than willing to use them?
Great article sir!
A lot of what you have written here is true for us in India too. We in sub-continent like the torture that is heaped on us. That is the only way to explain the fact that we as people refuse to change!
@fawad: If you want to bring in the world war analogy, lets drop a couple of Atom Bombs on Waziristan, then we sit down and talk with whatever is left.
@Napster: What about Kashmir. Have you succeeded in any war that you started? If you do nit give up your Kashmir obsession and are ever ready to fight with India, what prevents you from taking TTP on?
hissss....how dare you speak against The Great Khan.
I am from Dir and completed my intermediate education from Swat in 2001. Until then there were no signs of Taliban or any sign of extremism either in Dir, Swat or the terrain between the two. Yesterday the author also said, in a tv show, that Taliban took over swat and beheaded civilians in 1994. That was just blatant lie. We used to hike to every nook of swat during our college days, there were few board centers for annual exams and one of them was a Girls college in Sangota. Those days when we used to go there for our exams were the best days of the year. It was all calm, peaceful and serene. Everything was screwed up after 9/11, US invasion of Afghanistan and MMA government in KPK.
Well then have it your way, keep fighting TTP bcoz previous operations against them for past 7 years have been "very successful"...These continued operations against them have only damaged us more.
After World war 1 and 2, millions died and for sure many were women and children. Even then they sat together for negotiations. Now imagine if they had started blaming each other for being animals for killing innocent people, they would have continued fighting and killed even more millions.
HAve you noticed that IK is putting demands for TTP that even they themselves haven't asked for. Whose side is he on?He is practically acting like a spokesman and representative of the terrorists.
Kamran Shafi Sahib:
I have watched you on TV. You are a sane and patriotic voice and I admire you. I see the frustration and anger in you seeing that the people Pakistan are being deliberately misled by leaders like Imran Khan. I see similar frustration in many others also. How can someone think of handing over their country to terrorists like talibans, most of whom are not even Pakistanis? It is so sad that Pakistanis voted for Imran Khan even after they saw him standing and silently endorsing Sheikh Rasheed making an appeal to Mulla Omar and dignifying him as the Amir-Ul-Moumineen of Pakistan. Imran Khan also gave his silent support to sectarian forces that want to eliminate shias, ahmedies and christians by standing shoulder to shoulder with the other leaders of DPC.
I fully endorse the comment from @Parvez that the army should step in and put their foot down and do something about this mess. Continued listening to IK will only lead to a situation where leaders of different groups of talibans will become the amirs of small parts of Pakistan and Pakistan will disintegrate to many pieces. I believe that this time around NS was a different person and he wanted to take on the talibans but did not have enough courage to go solo on this. IK, gifted with charisma and blind following, put NS on the defensive and tied up his hands. It had been my stand for nearly 2 years now that IK is a disaster for Pakistan. No one else has caused so much damage to Pakistan as IK.
The army should have used the opportunity that came its way after the recent killing of the Major General and other top army officers but they were also hesitant. They should have taken this opportunity to go all out for the talibans. Even now, it would be good if Kayani approaches NS directly and asks him to order military action on his own, ignoring IK. NS should untie his own hands and also untie the hands of the Army. Continued hesitance will only discourage and weaken the army.
@Arindom:
It's not that strange.
In Pakistan the support for Islamists is wide and deep. It's spread in every institution of Pakistan and among every part of public sector. Then there are hundreds of thousands of tableeghis, Lashkars, Jaish etc who are with Islamists.
Any military action can lead to a civil war. Even though this civil was is small in percentage, it would still be massive
You guys don't have anything else other then criticizing PTI or IK.. He has this stance since 10 years..people voted for him..knowing this.. So masses agreed with it.. Army and center wants to do more operation then who is stopping them, they didn't listen to him in the past so what's the issue.. The reality is that he is the one who has the solution for it but because uncle Tom does not like it so It's not worth it.. Can you guarantee us after how many years of fighting we will solve this issue..reality is that America wants us to do operation they are not concerned about how many Pakistanis will be killed in reactions..
One man's ego has put all of the Pakistan on stake..
Sharia movement of Sofi Muhammad of the 1990 has nothing to do with Taliban... Pakistan destroyed the most beautiful and peaceful State of Swat... the level of life of a common man deteriorated, the level of education deteriorated.... health facilities and communication infrastructure has not improved since 1969 when the state was formally merged in Pakistan... of course common people have to show a reaction... and that reaction was doubled by the failure of our intelligence agencies and Army to detect and STOP that foreign powers who were supporting these people ..
right now there are two ways: fight and negotiate.. the state has been fighting since 2002.. but nothing changed.. so now the state must negotiate...whatever the price is... if fighting is chosen then more soldiers will die and more innocent civilians will die..
It's strange - but what conceivable reason there could be to want to talk to terrorists so badly?
Nice again.......the alternative is for the establishment to put their foot down and do something about the mess..........and that's not happening.
The sad fact is that the more bloodshed, the more calls for negotiations, read capitulation.
