Robbers managed to loot over Rs4 million from the branches of two private banks, the National Irish Bank and United Bank Limited, on Wednesday.

The first robbery took place in Landhi, where a group of armed men entered the branch of NIB bank and held the two security guards hostage at gunpoint. Police officials said that the robbers arrived at the bank at around 10am and managed to escape after completing the operation within 15 minutes.

The police reached the site immediately but could not do anything as the culprits had already escaped. “Five armed men were involved in the robbery,” said SI Shoaib Alam. “According to witnesses, they [robbers] arrived at the bank in a car and on motorcycles.” The officer said that the police was trying to identify the culprits using the footage recorded by the DVR system. He revealed that the robbers had managed to take away Rs3,389,950. A case was registered.

A few hours later, the branch of UBL situated near Noorani Chowrangi within the limits of Ferozabad police station was targeted. The armed men entered the bank at around 2:37pm and held three security guards, staff members and customers at gunpoint. “They first snatched the weapons from the security guards and later moved towards the cash counter,” SHO Aurangzaib Khattak told The Express Tribune. “They only took three minutes to complete their operation.” According to the police, the robbers were carrying sophisticated weapons and even had ball bombs in their hands. SHO Khattak said the robbers had arrived at the bank in a white Suzuki Mehran and managed to loot Rs890,000. They also took away the CCTV cameras installed at the bank while fleeing.
