SWABI:

Residents of Marghuz area of the district blocked the main Marghuz Road on Saturday to protest the rape and murder of a 13-year old girl.

Naida, 13, was returning home when unidentified culprits raped her and then strangled her to death on Thursday evening. Following this, they dumped her body in a maize field and escaped.

Demonstrators led by Awami National Party (ANP) leader and the party’s former president for PK-35 constituency, Akmal Khan, gathered on the main road after making announcements on loudspeakers from local mosques. They chanted slogans against the government and police for not taking the matter seriously.

Addressing the crowd, Akmal said if the girl was the daughter of a political leader or high-ranking government official, “the entire state machinery would be put to use to arrest the accused.”

It has been three days since the incident occurred and the police have not recorded statements of the victim’s family or launched a proper investigation.

Condemning the brutality, Akmal added, “Whoever is behind the incident must be hanged. If the police do not arrest the culprits within three days, we will hold a massive protest in the city and completely block the main road.”

More than an hour into the protest, Zaida police officials visited the area and assured demonstrators of investigating the case. Following this, protesters unblocked the road and dispersed peacefully.
