KARACHI:

A bomb was found outside the residence of Awami National Party’s leader, Abdul Razzak Buneri, in Saeedabad, Baldia Town on Wednesday.

After spotting the bomb, residents contacted the police who cordoned off the area after reaching the site. “We also evacuated the nearby houses before the arrival of the bomb disposal experts,” said Baldia Town SP Shahjahan Baloch. “A school adjacent to Buneri’s house was also informed and the children were taken to a safe location.”

The Bomb Disposal Squad defused the bomb but according to the officials, it took them a while to do so. The bomb was reportedly an improvised explosive device, weighing around 400 grammes of explosive materials.

Buneri is a senior leader of the ANP and had contested for a seat in the National Assembly in the last general elections. Sources in the ANP told The Express Tribune that Buneri, about 20 days back, had received a threatening phone call from Afghanistan by a person who identified himself as Sajjad. The ANP spokesperson neither denied nor confirmed the call, merely stating that the police was investigating the matter.
