ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Monday said an inquiry was being initiated into issuance of 70,000 arms licences by the Pakistan People Party (PPP) government in the last five years.

Replying to a question in the National Assembly, the interior minister said a probe into the issuance of 70,000 arms licences was necessary for deweaponisation in the country.

Answering another query during the question hour, he said that computerised arms licences would be issued to only those, who would carry weapons of legal caliber. He regretted that due to the issuance of illegal licences, hundreds of innocent people had been killed in terrorist attacks, adding that terrorism and crime would be rooted out from the society.

A comprehensive policy will be devised to control weaponisation, show of weapons, their supply, and cancellation of unnecessary arms licences.
