The mystery over Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad’s abrupt exit deepened on Saturday amid conflicting reports about him turning in his resignation and denials of him even contemplating the same.
Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) sources confirmed to The Express Tribune that the governor had sent his resignation to the president in protest at the targeted operation in Sindh. The media office in the Presidency, however, neither confirmed nor denied the resignation report as Saturday was a government holiday.
According to a report, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan phoned Ebad in Dubai and asked him to review his decision. “The interior minister assured the governor that the federal government would address his party’s concerns on Karachi operation,” said a representative in the minister’s office.
Asking Ebad to review his decision, the interior minister told him that the operation in Karachi was not directed against any particular political party or group. “The operation was aimed at eliminating criminal elements and bringing peace to Karachi,” the minister told the governor.
However, according to another report, Dr. Ebad during his telephonic conversation with Nisar clarified his position and denied reports about his resignation. Meanwhile, he reportedly expressed his concern over the targeted operation being carried out in Karachi by Rangers and police personnel.
“I have not yet resigned, but situation is very deplorable in which the option for the resignation cannot be ruled out” sources privy to the development quoted the governor.
The interior ministry spokesperson, however, did not confirm that the interior minister telephoned the governor and other MQM leaders in Karachi.
The MQM leaders also shied away from the question of Ebad’s resignation. MQM leader Faisal Subzwari, speaking to media said, “The governor has left for Dubai. We do not have any idea about his resignation. You can confirm it from the President House in Islamabad.”
Talking to The Express Tribune, a spokesperson for the Governor House did not say when the governor would return, but reiterated that the incumbent had not yet resigned. “I cannot further comment, but it is governor’s personal visit and he frequently goes to meet his family and relatives there,” he said.
According to reports, Chaudhry Nisar also contacted MQM Senator Babar Ghauri and Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah. “The interior minister discussed the situation of Karachi with the CM. He appreciated the role of Rangers and police against, extortionists, terrorists, target killers and suspects involved in kidnapping for ransom,” said CM House spokesman.
On the other hand, sources in MQM said that during the telephonic conversation, MAM leader Babar Ghauri told Nisar how ‘their innocent workers and leaders’ were being arrested in Karachi operation which according to him was aimed at victimising MQM.
“The interior minister has assured governor Sindh and Babar Ghauri that our genuine grievances would be redressed,” said a senior MQM leader.
Senior police official slain
A senior police official was shot dead in Karachi on Saturday in a broad daylight near his residence. Forty-eight year old Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) Abdul Hasnain Mumtaz Shah was on his way to Juvenile Prison when two armed men riding a motorcycle targeted him near his house in Surti Society in Model Colony.
According to eyewitnesses, both the armed men, wearing helmets, first intercepted victim’s car and later shot him multiple times before fleeing from the site. Shah died on the spot.

@Abid P. Khan: We can see how sober your comment is.
@aysha M Did the media jump the guns previously. Reports confirm that he has had discussion with the interior minister regarding resignation; but why from Dubai
Worse law and order situation in his tenure. Though ceremonial position he could have done a lot for Karachi other then self projection.
Another useless Governer and a puppet of Altaf. Don't worry he will not be out of pocket he will be recieving regular monthly income from the British Government (they call it Dole over there). I think the fear of his cases will be reopened has lead him to his decision to leave. Have you not seen the news of Witness Protection Bill will be presented.
Moreover he has spoiled the education system and the decision of awarding Malik with an honarary degree says it all. Karachi needs massive cleansing !!!!!!
Ishrat-ul-Ebad has been a most un-disputed person. He has a lovely and cool minded personality to impress any-body. He has proved a very successful negotiator and a very good listener. If not Governor then his capabilities should be utilised some-where else.
Isn't there some protocol/procedure for leaving country by an employee of Government. Even the non-gazetted employees are required to seek Ex-Pak leave and departmental NOC and handing over the charge. Is this person complying with any of the requirements. This the governance of our Governor. He remained the governor for more than a decade and got Hilal e Imtiaz. Can any one explain how, why and by whom.
@Aysha M: "Mystery deepens because media is too keen to jump the guns without having to verify the news." . Like a Pavlovian dog, they start salivating. Sobriety does not exist in their dictionary.
ISI pulls its strings with an operation in Karachi to curb the MQM Mafia, While RAW and MI5 pull there strings by letting Governor resign. Karachi needs a change guys no more JI, MQM, PPP. Support PTI in Karachi think national. Banana Republic of Pakistan!
Let him go this time. If he did not resign , then replace him. I am sure there are lot of capable people in the country. Basically he is a corrupt man. His family kept on taking welfare money from British govt even though he was Givernor in Sind . Finally they made it public and then he had to return the money . This is the evidence against his corruption and moral standard.
Just before leaving he used Arnold's immortal lines.............I'll be back.
@Aysha M: Same happens with all other parties, MQM is no exception.
Biased media put slain police officer to governor news, ET clever
Same drama as always by MQM,I hope n league let him resign and let him get lost whereever he wants to...I hope people of karachi can work out which party is making a fool of them by exploiting them in each and every way possible ..and have the courage to reject them once and for all ..
Governor of Sindh Isharat-ul-Ebad Khan is not indespensible. It is not written any where in the Constitution of Pakistan that Dr. Isharat-ul-Ebad Khan will remain life time Governor of Sindh.
Karachi must be clean from all sort of target killers and other mafia's without any discrimination as who belongs to which party, otherwise, Karachi would not be able to regain its original peace prior to 1985.
Instead of requesting Governor of Sindh to come back and resume his duties, the Governor of Sindh should be sent packing by Presidential Order and a new non-political Governor should be appointed in Sindh so that the mess of Karachi should be cleaned without any political pressure from any quarter.
@Mamoon Lodhi: This is the real case.. I second you.
MQM's blackmailing starts again. Actually, MQM wants the government to listen to them and spare their target killers, else they would start 'Mohajir' drama again.
Mystery deepens because media is too keen to jump the guns without having to verify the news
MAM leader Babar Ghouri? does anyone read the copy before sending it out for publishing/printing?
With the recent report published in New York TImes that MQM has 10'000 armed workers with 25,000 in reserve should this party not take a legal action against the newspaper. When Imran Khan gave a similar statement the party workers lodged strong protest all over the world. The governor resignation must be accepted and new honest and competent person should be appointed in his place. If some one failed to deliver in over 12 years he is unlikely to bring a change in next few years.
O my God! This is happening again! We have made our policians believe that they can easily fool us.
Do not worry he will come back again.
Governor for the last 14 years. seen 07 prime ministers .what a democracy.
