ISLAMABAD:

Dozens of katchi abadi residents on Monday held a demonstration at I-9 Colony against the government’s plans to evict slum dwellers in the twin cities.

The protest, organised by the Awami Workers Party (AWP) and the All Pakistan Alliance for Katchi Abadis (APAK), was part of an ongoing series of demonstrations by slum dwellers to organise themselves against government-backed action.

Addressing the protesters, AWP leader Asim Sajjad Akhtar said political promises made to katchi abadis residents before the elections proved to be hollow. “The only way for working classes to survive, is through an organised struggle that unites working people across religious, ethnic lines.”

Sheikh Abdur Rahman, from the I-9 Colony, said katchi abadi residents must unite against the ruling elites who label the residents terrorists. Protesters said they would not rest until their demands for permanent residence were met.
