Over two dozen people from Thatha village on Friday staged a protest demonstration against Rodala Road police for failing to arrest a man accused of murder.
The demonstration was led by women who sat in front of city government secretariat and chanted slogans against the police.
The women also beat their chests and lay in the middle of Zila Council Chowk and blocked it for traffic.
Riyasat Ali, one of the protestors, told newsmen that Khalid Abdullah, a resident of Thatha, was murdered three months ago.
He said they had filed a complaint against the suspect.
“Instead of arresting the suspect, the station house officer (SHO) advised us to make a comprise,” he said.
He claimed the SHO had been bribed by the suspect.
Operations SSP Ghulam Mubasshar Mekan visited the scene and assured the protestors that the suspect would be investigated and arrested.
He also assured them that action would be taken against any police officer found accepting bribes.
The demonstrators then called off their protest and dispersed peacefully.
Talking to The Express Tribune, Rodala Road SHO Muneer Ahmed said, “The police are investigating the case. If there is evidence against a suspect, he will be arrested.”
He denied taking illegal gratification from any side and said the investigation of the case would be completed purely on merit.
